Dear Students:

It is a wonderful experience to be able to teach International Students, and it is my delight you are in my classes.

HINTS FOR STUDENTS

Continue to use and learn in your native language.

Read books in both languages that, will help you to become a good reader in other languages you study.

Do your homework, homework is an essential part of the ESOL curriculum.

The following is one of the syllabus for our classes.

ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES
SYLLABUS

Level: I - Beginners

This course is based on developing conversational skills in Standard English with emphasis on vocabulary and grammatical structures in daily life situations. Vocabulary, pronunciation, sentence structure, and intonation are stressed.
Beginning Conversation in Standard English endeavors to prepare students for academic classes and speaking assignments in general by achieving the following objectives:

• Develop student's conversational skills through the use of vocabulary and grammatical structures used in daily life situations.
• Introducing real life situations through the use of presentations, poems, and role-plays.
• Develop student's listening comprehension skills through exposure to recorded listening comprehension material.
• Raise student's awareness of the basic principles of English pronunciation as well as common stress and intonation through exposure to chants, songs, and video clips.
• Language Lab is required one day a week in which students speak, listen, and write recorded exercises.

EXPECTATIONS:

• The student is expected to be able to conduct conversations in every day's situations.
• The student is expected to participate in all written and oral activities.
• The student is expected to be familiar with Standard English pronunciation, stress and intonation patterns.

REQUIREMENTS:

• The student is required to keep a notebook with all written assignments for monthly revision.
• The student is required to do an Electronic Portfolio, on a familiar topic using vocabulary and grammatical structures.
• The student is required to do a rough draft of his or her portfolio for initial revision prior his presentation.
• The student is required to be able to be generally understood by a native speaker of English to at least an 80%.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• The student's responsibility is to keep all of his or her assignments in sequence so if he or she is absent he must ask the teacher for the missing assignments.
• The student's responsibility to be prepared for oral, or "pop" quizzes without any notification from the teacher.

GRADING CRITERIA

• Language Proficiency / Individual Presentations / Conversations 30%
• Grammar for communication 20%
• Written Test 10%
• Electronic Portfolio
40%
