It's Greek to Me!

In middle school and high school, the students are exposed to and encouraged to learn as many Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and root words as possible as a vocabulary decoding strategy. Why is it important in elementary school? Research shows that approximately 85% of our English words are derivatives of Greek or Latin words. Many of these "stems" are commonly taught in K-5 classes! Exposing them to as few as 50 high frequency stems and making students aware of them in their everday lives increases vocabulary comprehension exponentially.

Language is not the only thing we have inherited from ancient Greek culture. The unit is designed to expose the students to the math, science, political, social, and philosophical influences. They may see that as much as some things change, some things stay the same.
