Stop-Motion Animation
Stop-Motion Animation, or stop-action animation, is the compilation of many still shots put together in sequence. When it is shown in rapid succession, the viewer gets the impression that they are seeing a "movie." In SMA, there is usually an element of unexplained movement like a toy moving on its own. In the clips, the students seem to float across the surface on their own. (Click on the links)

The technique of SMA has been used in the movie industry for about 100 years! One of the most memorable examples of early SMA is found in the 1933 movie King Kong. Surprisingly, as much as things change in the entertainment industry, the SMA process has remained pretty much the same. Technology, of course, has taken this style of animation to new levels.

My students will progress through several stages while learning the SMA process. Our first lessons will focus on the process itself--planning, writing, staging, and production. As they progress, they will use objects as characters in their clips. As a culminating project, we will create a story that will be made into a claymation clip! Check back often to see new clips.
