| Playing the Pitches |
Playing Instruments Students in first grade play a variety of instruments, including xylophones and unpitched percussion. Sometimes the music teacher will tell them what to play, sometimes they get to create it themselves, and other times, they must read the given notation correctly.
In the picture at the left, students are looking at music projected onto the TV and playing the right pitch on the xylophone. |

| Write Your Own Rhythm |
Working with Rhythms First grade students practice rhythms, too, using both iconic notation and real music notes. Classes say rhythms, clap them, and play them on drums and Boomwhackers. By the end of the year, they can read and write a variety of rhythmic values.
In the picture on the right, a student uses a Heart Chart to show a rhythm that she has written. The class will read it from the Heart Chart.
The pictures at the bottom of the page show students creating their own rhythms within hearts, putting one beat per heart. The next step will be to add pitches, creating their own song. |
