Learning the Parts Fourth graders have the skills to play some great sounding music. They know a wide variety of rhythms and have played many different classroom instruments.
Now it's time to put it all together, adding instrumental accompaniment to songs, and playing melodies on Boomwhackers and xylophones. All students learn one small part at a time, adding the next part once the first has been learned.
One by one, new parts are added, until everyone knows every part. Singers and players work together to create a wonderful result.

A Wonderful Result Students must learn to listen to each other while they play. Not only must the groups keep the same steady beat, but students must balance the sound, so that all parts can be heard.
When the group sounds really good, we invite the teachers and administrators to come in and listen. The students love to perform for these special audiences.
They also love it when I set up the microphone and record their performance. They listen to the playback and decide if the recording is good enough to save, or if they can make it better by trying again. The very best recordings will be emailed to their teacher, and maybe even to the principal or the elementary coordinator! |
