Music Activities At Martinez Elementary, students participate in many musical activities. Classes learn about beat, rhythm, and pitch by singing and playing a variety of instruments. Learning about composers is fun, too, as students learn music and history at the same time. Miss Lovingood plays a variety of instruments, from bowed psaltery to tuba, so students are exposed to more than classroom instruments.
Several grade levels perform for parent meetings each year; and Chorus performs both for the school and the community beyond.
Each year, professional musicians visit the school to perform for the students. Members of the Augusta Symphony Woodwind Trio and the Augusta Symphony String Quartet come, as well as members of the Augusta Opera. By listening to these groups, students can hear great works and learn about musical careers and instruments.

Rules and Expectations Music involves teamwork. Members of ensembles must work together to create the best sound possible. Rules in the Music classroom, then, are for the benefit of all, to reinforce cooperation, fair play, and respect. (I have a L-O-T of rules!)
Listen to the teacher. Obey instructions. Try your best.
Listening to the teacher helps students understand the goals for that day and may also help them know the proper way to play an instrument. Obeying instructions will lead to a safer working environment and a better performance. Finally, trying their best encourages students to go above and beyond what they have already achieved. All of these rules together will allow classes to make marvelous musical sounds.

Chorus Chorus Information The MES Chorus is a non-auditioned group of 4th and 5th grade students who enjoy singing. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 AM. More information will be given at the beginning of the school year.
The Chorus has two concert seasons: winter and spring. We sing for PTO functions during each season. As part of our community outreach, the singers enjoy visiting retirement homes to sing for the residents, as well as leading our school-wide sing-alongs.
