Social Studies Welcome Letter |
Dear Students,
Welcome to 6th grade Social Studies! We’ve got lots of interesting cultures & time periods to learn about this year! My goal is to provide you with many educational opportunities and challenges where you achieve success.
CLASSROOM INFORMATION
Communication
One major component for your success is consistent communication between school and home. Please contact me anytime you have a concern. The best way to reach me is through email.
******EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY: Parents, please email me with your student’s name & class period in the subject line. I’ll add you to my address book and your student will earn 5 bonus points.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
YOU are the key to making this school year a success. You simply need to do the following three things each day:
1. Be prepared for class. 2. Be a diligent learner. 3. Be respectful.
CLASS MATERIALS
You have been issued one Social Studies book (blue with a smiling Inuit boy on the cover) that must be left at home until the end of the school year. In class, we will use a classroom set of these books, as needed.
Each day, you are expected to bring your 3-Ring SS binder to class containing all SS papers. You also need #2 pencils, a quiet handheld sharpener, colored pencils, ink pens, highlighters, a pencil bag that fits in your 3-ring binder and clean paper.
SS BINDER
Notebooks will be cleaned out in class at the end of the nine weeks, or as needed. Doing so at any other time without my guidance could prove to be a very unfortunate choice. If you need help reorganizing your notebook, please see me and I will be glad to help you with it.
Three divider tabs must be labeled with: Current Unit; Old Unit; and Graded Papers.
GRADING SYSTEM
Classwork/Homework 65% Tests/Projects 20% Quizzes 15%
Always save your graded papers until we clean out notebooks in class. If you find that I’ve incorrectly entered your grade in I-Parent, simply bring me your paper and I will change it.
LATE WORK
Sometimes unexpected events can occur that prevent you from completing an assignment on time. For this reason, you will receive a late pass card that is worth four late passes. This pass entitles you to turn in ONE assignment ONE school day late, four times throughout the year, ideally using one per nine weeks. Simply bring me your card and I will initial it, along with your late assignment. Ripped cards will not be accepted. Lost or stolen cards will not be replaced. Always write your first and last name in ink on your late pass card and ‘tiny tickets’ (bonus points), as they will not be replaced if lost or stolen. Late work turned in without a late pass will be deducted a minimum of 30%.
NO-NAME PAPERS
No-Name papers will be graded and placed in the “No-Names” box. Your grade will be entered once you find your paper, put your name on it, and hand it to me. If I don’t receive your paper, your grade remains a zero. * I-Parent will show the missing grade as an ‘M,’ for missing, and calculate it as a zero.

"Does the SS Textbook Stay Home?"...YES! |
Blue Inuit Textbook (the main SS book) - One copy is checked out to the student and should stay home until checked back in before withdrawal or at the end of the school year. There is a class set of the same books in the room that are NOT to leave the room.
Purple Castle Textbook - This is an extra resource that is used in the classroom to enhance some of the units. These books are NOT checked out to students through the school, but a limited number may be checked out on a first come, first served basis after 4th period. If a student checks out a purple castle book, it MUST be returned the following day before homeroom, as copies are very limited.
Online Textbook - Students will need the log-in information they received in class to gain access to their textbook resources online. |

No Powerpoint... No Problem |
Throughout the school year, I may post powerpoints on my site to help students study and better grasp the concepts we are learning in class. The following link will allow you to download Powerpoint Viewer. Once you have downloaded the program to your computer you will be able to view all powerpoint presentations that I upload to my website. This is not a working program. It will only allow you to view powerpoint presentations.
