What is the Early Intervention Program?
The Early Intervention Program (EIP)is a program that provides support for students who need extra assistance in reading and math in order to perform at grade level. It provides more individualized instruction for students. This program services kindergarten through fifth grade students.
This year I am using an augmented format to assist students. This means that I go into the individual classrooms and work with all of the students at one time or another. I provide enrichment activities, as well as, remedial activities.
I also provide the students with an alternative for learning many skills. Many times I teach the same skill the classroom teacher has introduced, but in a different way. This is an effort to meet the different learning styles of all of our students.
I also work with students one-on-one to work with reading challenges. Oral reading fluency practices and assesments help to correct any challenges that may present themselves as the students tackle content subjects such as science and social studies. |

| Sites that will help you help your child in reading and math. |
I visit Mrs. Piper's and Mrs. Jenkins' reading classes to help students during "Workshop" time on reading skills. I use games and the reading selection to encourage good reading habits. Many times I will work with selected groups of students or assist classroom teachers with reading centers.
Activities are selected to teach necessary skills that students need to strengthen their reading abilities. Word decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, cause and effect, and inference are some of the important skills that are taught during this time.
Homework assignments consist of: 1. Daily reading of Accelerated Reading Books for 20-30 miniutes a day. The book level is determined by the classroom teacher. Don't forget to initial your student's Abracadabra Reader sheet! 2. Reading of text from the reading book. These reading assignments will be given as we begin to read the selections in class. 3. Skills practice will be sent home in the form of practice sheets and special assignments. Students will be given information for these assignments as needed.
Please help by impressng upon your child the importance of completing their homework each evening. It is this practice that will help your child become a stronger reader. Also remind your child to turn in their homework. This way we will know where your child needs additional help.
There are web sites that you can visit at home or at the local library in order to help your child build reading skills.
You will find web sites that will enhance your child's reading abilities at the link to the left.

Students meet with me to work on basic math skills that they are having challenges in with. I work with small groups using manipulatives (base-ten cubes, play money, unifix cubes, etc.) to assist students in developing an understanding of how math works in our daily lives. Each new skill that is taught by the classroom teacher is reinforced using manipulatives or other strategies.
We try to give your child real life examples of the way we use mathematics in our daily lifes. EAch week we discuss ways that each individual student used math. Problem solving using real estate booklets, menus, sales papers, and more will give your child an idea of the importance of math in our world.
Practice of basic computation is provided on a daily basis using computer activities. The computer is also used to reinforce the concepts taught in class.
Practice for some basic mathematical skills are listed at the link to the left. |
