Evans High School - Saturday, September 26, 2009 The 1st Annual Columbia County Math Tournament will be held at Evans High School on Saturday, Sep 26, 2009. (See the Google Map link below for location information.) Some changes may occur, but the following information provides a thorough description: 1) Schedule: .....0730-0830: Registration .....0845-0850: Welcome to the Math Tournament .....0900-1030: Written Tests (all levels in specific classrooms) .....1030-1100: Break Time (in Commons) .....1100-1200: Ciphering (all levels in Commons) .....1200-1215: Intermission (tabulate results) .....1215-1230: Present Trophies (in Commons) 2) Registration and Fees: ...a) Each school is restricted to a maximum of 25 students. ...b) There are "No Registration Fees" (Sponsored by EHS Math Honor Society. Note: Concession sales will help to offset trophy and setup/cleanup costs.) ...c) Schools must submit a preregistration notice (email) by Sep 1 that provides the estimated number of students who will be attending the tournament and the name of the school sponsor, including their email address. ...d) Schools must submit a second preregistration notice (email) by Sep 23 that provides the roster of students who will be attending with the related 4-digit school codes and the names of the sponsor and chaperones. (See the Roster Instructions link below.) ...e) On the day of the tournament, sponsors will be required to provide a roster of their final list of students with their related 4-digit numbers. (The roster/names may be adjusted on the day of the tournament.) 3) Eligibility and Grade Levels: ...a) Only students enrolled in Columbia County Schools or by invitation may attend, and those are restricted to the following: .....1) Middle Schools: Columbia, Evans, Greenbrier, Grovetown, Harlem, Lakeside, Riverside, and Stallings Island. .....2) High Schools: Evans, Greenbrier, Grovetown, Harlem, Lakeside, Davidson, and AR Johnson. (Since the EHS Math Honor Society is sponsoring the tournament and working the event, the only EHS students eligible to compete cannot be current or prior members of the EHS Math Honor Society/Math Team.) ...b) Test and ciphering categories are divided into the following groups: .....1) Middle School (6th-8th) .....2) Junior Varsity (9th-10th) .....3) Varsity (11th-12th) (Note: any student who is enrolled in Trig must compete at the Varsity level) 4) Calculators, Tests, and Ciphering: ...a) Calculators: No calculators may be used during any part of the tournament. ...b) Written Tests: All written tests will be multiple choice and involve 50 problems. Answers will be placed on scantron answer forms. The tabulated results will be final. Scores will reflect a percentage grade of correct answers, with no penalty for wrong answers. (42 correct = 84% score.) Time will be called at 10:30am, no exceptions. Students may leave the classroom as soon as they are done, but may not return. Copies of the written tests and answers will be made available after all students have begun their tests. ...c) Ciphering: The ciphering portion of the tournament will be individual ciphering only. All students in all categories will cipher at the same time in the Commons. Each student will receive a package of problems for their math level. Problems answered in the first minute get 10 points and those during the second minute receive 5 points. No points will be awarded after 2 minutes. Copies of the ciphering problems and answers will be made available at the end of the tournament. 5) Trophies: ...a) Trophies will be awarded in "Individual" and "Team" categories. Technically there are no teams, but the top four scores from a school will be treated as a team, then the next four best scores as a second team, and so on. ...b) Individual awards will be based on 75% of their written score and 25% of their ciphering score. ...c) Team awards will be based on the same criteria as individual awards, but they will involve the top four students from a school, then the next four students from that school, etc., as they compare with the other schools in their math level. ...d) Print-outs of summary results and rankings will be made available as soon as possible. Since we are trying to keep the tournament from running into the afternoon, it may be necessary to email the complete results. 6) Practice Problems: The format for this tournament is a variation of the math tournament at Georgia Southern University. It is recommended that you use the GSU prior tests to prepare for the Columbia County Math Tournament. (See the GSU Sample Problems link below, then select Previous Exams.) 7) Sponsors and Parent Chaperones: ...Each school is required to provide one sponsor/chaperone for every ten students. If 25 students are registered, it is recommended that three sponsor/chaperones attend the tournament. As needed, sponsors and chaperones may be asked to help with monitoring the written tests and/or assisting with retrieving answer sheets during the ciphering rounds. Your assistance is appreciated. 8) Food and Drinks: ...a) Students are welcome to bring food and drinks. (Only water is permitted in the classrooms where written tests take place.) ...b) Concession sales will offer drinks and snacks with a price range from $.50 to $1 each. Please advise your students that their purchases will help to eliminate the cost for future registration fees. 9) Cell phones: .....Cell phones are not permitted in the classrooms during the written tests. Anyone caught using a cell phone during the written test will be disqualified from the tournament.
