Reading
book animation We will be reading from the Harcourt Trophies Reading Program. Although we cover various skills with each story, we will usually choose one skill in particular to emphasize. See examples of skills we will focus on below.
Sequencing
Click here for a practice site.
We will practice the importance of the order of events in a story. This will include the use of words that indicate order.
Fiction and Non-fiction Related Skills
It is very important for the children to be able to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction. We will be discussing these genres using terminology such as "real" and "make-believe" or "fantasy," "fact," "opinion," etc.
Inferencing
The children will be figuring out occurrences in a story without reading these events directly in the story. They will be instructed to use story clues and their own experiences to make these determinations.
Cause and Effect
The children and I discuss how one event causes another event to occur.
Main Idea
We will focus on what a story is mostly about. As part of this discussion, we will discuss the supporting details that helped us determine the main idea.
Related to this skill area is the "topic sentence" of a paragraph. I will point out to the kids that the topic sentence is usually the first sentence, but not always. It can even be at the end of the paragraph!
Story Elements
We will discuss elements of a story: characters, settings, and plots (actions, or problems and solutions). We may also discuss the effects on the story if any of these elements were different. We may also compare and contrast elements of different stories.
Reading Diagrams/Illustrations
We will practice how to read and interpret pictures and labelled diagrams. (We will also read graphs, graphic organizers, etc.)
Locating Information
The class will use indexes, glossaries, table of contents, etc. to locate information. Although we probably will not have a particular story with this focus skill, we will cover it in various stories and with other opportunities.
