Math Vocabulary

1. digit- Any one of the ten symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 used to write numbers

2. place value- Place value determines the value of a digit in a number, based on the location of the digit

3. period-Each group of three digits separated by commas in a multidigit number

Period Period Period
Millions Thousands Ones
Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones Hundreds Tens Ones
8 5, 6 4 3, 9 0 0

4. millions-The period after thousands, equal to one thousand thousands

5. benchmark-A known number of things that helps you understand the size or amount of a different number of things

6. pictograph-A graph that uses pictures to show and compare information

7. compare- To describe whether numbers are equal to, less than, or greater than each other

8. sum- The answer to an addition problem

9. difference- The answer in a subtraction problem

10. round- To increase or decrease a number to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, and so on; when you round a number to the nearest ten, you find the ten that is closest.

Hint: Find your place
Look next door
Four or less-just ignore
Five or greater-add one more
All digits in front -stay the same
All digits behind -zero’s your name
43 = 40 56 = 60

11. estimate- To find a number that is close to an exact amount

EX. (32 x 9)
(30 x 10 )= 300 estimate

12. expression- A part of a number sentence that combines numbers and operation signs but does not
have an equal sign

Ex. (12 - 4) – 3

13. variable- A letter or symbol that stands for a number or numbers
EX. 7 + n variable

14. parenthesis- The symbols used to show which operation or operations in an expression should
be done first
Ex. (12 + 4) – 3

15. factor- A number that is multiplied by another number to get a product.
Ex. 2 X 3 = 2 and 3 are factors

16. inverse operations- Operations that undo each other. Addition and
subtraction are inverse operations. Multiplication and division are inverse operations.

Examples: 5 + 4 = 9, so 9 - 4 = 5

3 x 4 = 12, so 12 ๗ 4 = 3

17. fact family- A set of related multiplication and division,
or addition and subtraction equations .

Ex.
2 + 4 = 6 6 - 4 = 2 or 3 x 6 = 18 18 ๗ 6 = 3
4 + 2 = 6 6 - 2 = 4 6 x 3 = 18 18 ๗ 3 = 6

18. multiple- The product of a given whole number and another whole number

Example:
10 10 10 10
x 1 x 2 x 3 x 4
10 20 30 40 - multiples of 10

19. product- The answer to a multiplication problem

20. Identity Property- The product of 1 and any number is that number
Ex. 1 X 7 = 7 1 X 1,000,000 = 1,000,000

21. Zero Property – The product of 0 and any number is 0.
Ex. 0 X 8 = 0 0 X 2,000,000 = 0

22. Commutative Property- The order of the factors is changed, but the product remains the same.
Ex. 3 X 6 = 18 6 X 3= 18

23. Associative Property- The grouping of the factors is changed, but the product remains the same.
HINT- Associative Property contains parenthesis !
Ex. ( 2 X 3 ) x 4 = 2 x ( 3 X 4) =
6 x 4 = 24 2 X 12 = 24

24. Distributive Property- Multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products.
Ex. 2 X 12 = 24 2 x ( 10 + 2) =
(2 x 10) + (2 X 2)=
20 + 4 = 24
25. Order of Operations- A special set of rules that can be used to solve an expression with more than one operation.
1. Do the operations inside parentheses.
2. Multiply and divide from left to right.
3. Add and subtract from left to right.

Example:
6 + (4 X 2) ๗ 2 – 5
6 + 8 ๗ 2 – 5
6 + 4 – 5
10 – 5
5 Multiply inside parentheses.
Divide.
Add.
Subtract.
