Beginning ESOL-- Beginners learn communication skills, basic vocabulary, listening and speaking, pronunciation, phonetic reading, reading of short texts, basic sentence construction in present, past and future tenses, sentence and short paragraph writing. Textbook: High Point The Basics, 2 workbooks and reading stories Other texts and materials may be used if needed, in some cases also using Rosetta Stone software. This is a very basic course emphasizing verbal communication. |
High Beginner/low intermediate |
High Beginner/low intermediate At this level we continue to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Reading gradually becomes more difficult, vocabulary gaps are filled in, students must explain more complex concepts. Academic vocabulary is introduced in the areas of psychology, biology, relationships, ecology, disaster control, and literature. Study skills are used to prepare the student for the academic classroom. Short projects are presented and writing is developed for specific purposes. Other readings may also be used. Textbook: High Point A, one workbook Pace: One unit every two weeks, including a reading, vocabulary, study skills, grammar, a composition, and a test. The objective for this course is for the student to be comfortable with everyday nonacademic English--listening, speaking, and simple reading and writing. |
