High Beginner/low intermediate At this level we continue to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Reading gradually becomes more difficult, vocabulary gaps are filled in, students must explain more complex concepts. Academic vocabulary is introduced in the areas of psychology, biology, relationships, ecology, disaster control, and literature. Study skills are used to prepare the student for the academic classroom. Short projects are presented and writing is developed for specific purposes. Other readings may also be used. Textbook: High Point A, two workbooks Pace: One unit every two weeks, including a reading, vocabulary, study skills, grammar, a composition, and a test.

Intermediate ESOL Reading now emphasizes fiction, history, and poetry. Grammar is more complex, using compound and complex sentences in various tenses. Units are approximately two weeks long and include a story, an analysis of that story, a summary of that story, a grammar workbook unit, and other workbook material that may include grammar, vocabulary development, character development, maps and charts, or a research topic. Advanced ESOL Reading is now near grade level. The readings are of various genres, but especially history and short stories. Literary language is used to analyze the plots, characters, and word choice of the authors. Different writing models are used, especially the five paragraph plot analysis and the five paragraph essay to persuade. Generally we complete a unit within two weeks: reading, composition, grammar, analysis, study skills, vocabulary, and a test.

Senior ESOL The content of this class varies from year to year. This year this class will working on the senior project and complete the research paper in the first semester. Also students will practice to pass the GHSWT writing test. The second semester will emphasize literature. Depending upon the length of the reading, a unit may be two or three weeks, and include a story, discussion of the story, a literary focus on that piece, a composition, and a test. This course is similar to a regular English class except that the reading may be adapted or we may spend longer on it.
