Welcome to the wonderful world of second grade! We look forward to coming to school every day because we have fun while learning important and exciting skills.
We spend each day sharpening our skills in Reading, Spelling, English, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Music, Art and Physical Education classes are terrific because we think our instructors are the best in Columbia County.
Our School has an awesome computer lab and media center and our playground has a lot of fun places to play.
Lunches taste good and Our Principal and Assistant Principal keep everything nice and in perfect order.
Grovetown's teachers are not only intelligent and wise, but they really care about the students.
Please feel welcome to visit our web site often. We hope to keep you informed of all the wonderful and exciting things happening in our classroom.
We hope you find it interesting, informative, and fun! Enjoy your visit!
Mrs. Annis, Mrs. Norris and 17 wonderful students :-)
OUR FIELD TRIPS AND OTHER EXCITING ADVENTURES:
Fort Discovery was GREAT!
We had so much fun starting with the bus ride there. Everybody was so excited as some children had never visited there before. After a brief orientation, we were chosen the first class to play in the inside playground.
We visited an awesome area where we were able to shoot water guns at each other without getting wet. We played dress up and and acted out stories with puppets.
The "Hot Hands" display was awesome! It taught about liquid crystal.
Here are just of our favorite exhibits:
Videos where we were shown running from dinosaurs
The MOON WALK
Videos where we were shown playing professional ice hockey
The old fashioned telephones
A HUGE pencil that we could make draw beautiful spirographs
The LIGHTNING MACHINE
Lastly, we enjoyed a relaxing picnic by the river while watching the rowing team practice. The flowers were in bloom, the air was fresh and everything was beautiful.
We would like to go again with our parents. Maybe during the summer break?
GRAYSTONE RANCH
Our field trip to Graystone Ranch was a wonderful learning experience. There were so many different types of animals there. We learned all about animals that you would find on a farm. We were able to pet horses, ponies and a donkey while on our ride around the field. We saw baby flying squirrels, ducks, geese, rabbits and lots of other animals.
The bus ride was fun but our favorite part was when Mrs. Annis caught the baby pig. We hope to visit there again soon!

CELEBRATING SECOND GRADE
|
Field Day with Mrs. Izzo and Mr. Heider:
Friday, May 16, 2008
Students are to wear shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes WITH socks.
Second graders are asked to bring an extra pair of shoes and a small towel in their book bags in case we get wet.
REMEMBER: No flip-flops, sandals or sunglasses for activities.
Water will be provided.
ALOHA!
Our End of the Year Party will be a Luau. The fun will begin on Tuesday, May 20th at 1:00. Parents are welcome to join in on the fun.
There will be food, music and entertainment. Costumes for the students will be provided by the teachers. Parents feel free to dress up too!
Some interesting things to think about:
Years ago children were trained many life skills and talents at home from family members.
It seems like nowadays, we are so busy we sometimes forget how important it is to share family skills and talents with the children.
We should plan activities to ensure our children learn these valuable skills.
Perhaps Uncle James builds bird houses and Uncle Sam is a great fisherman. Maybe Aunt Mary bakes delicious homemade biscuits and Aunt Iris has a green thumb. Set up a time where your children can watch these skills and learn from them.
If you have a skill taught to you by an older family member, plan to "pass it down" to the next generation and keep it going.
If we do not pass it down to our children, many things will get lost forever. For example, My grandmother was an excellent cook and owned a little cafe. She passed away and I never learned her cooking secrets. So often, I wish I knew how she made that delicious crackling cornbread.
Summer break is around the corner. Let's try to schedule a few days of old fashioned learning for our children.
Research shows that children learn and remember more effectively when they can see and test it in real-life situations.
Summer Ideas:
Children LOVE to measure. Get out the big measuring tape from the garage and show them how to measure things. They will love it and end up measuring everything around the house.
Demonstrate measuring length, width, weight, height, and temperature.
Help them learn to measure items using centimeters, inches, feet, meters, yards, etc.
Interesting facts to know and share:
60 seconds = 1 minute 60 minutes = 1 hour 1 day = 24 hours
7 days = 1 week 4 weeks = 1 month
12 months = 1 year 52 weeks = 1 year 365 days = 1 year
12 inches = 1 foot 30cm = 12 inches or 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard 100cm = 1 meter
100 pennies = 1 dollar 20 nickels = 1 dollar 10 dimes = 1 dollar 4 quarters = 1 dollar 2 half dollars = 1 dollar
