Correct production of speech is a developmental process. If a child does not master a sound by the average age of customary production, then he/she has a delay in articulation. He/she may substitute one speech sound for another, distort the speech sound, omit the speeh sound, or add other sounds to the speech sound. Some children make errors in speech sound production that follow a pattern. As children develop, they naturally simplify their speech to make talking easier; however, they should not continue to use these simplifications.
