For most children, language is acquired early and without formal instruction. A language delay occurs at any time a child does not achieve language skills according to age-appropriate national or local norms. The child who has a language delay has language abilities below those expected for his/her age. Language delays can often be remediated through speech-language therapy. Areas of language that can be delayed include vocabulary, phonological awareness, language processing, auditory or written directions, problem solving, grammar, social skills, and verbal expression -- just to name few!
