Welcome to first grade! We are glad everybody is here! We are learning about animals and their habitats in our new S.R.A. Language Arts series. We are learning about parts of speech, especially nouns and adjectives. We are working on our Dolch words, and on building our reading speed to 60 or more words per minute. Also, we are working on the writing process skills, and using our very best penmanship.
Accelerated Reader (AR) tests are also underway; you can click on the link for Accelerated Reader at Home, enter your child's information that was sent home to you, and build a virtual bookshelf of titles that your child has taken as A.R. tests. It's a lot of fun.
In math, we are exploring new strategies for adding and subtracting. We are building fact families. During our calendar and math journal time, we are practicing so many skills which include estimation, even and odd numbers, counting money, place value, skip counting using the hundreds board, solving word problems, and using tally marks. We will begin to take timed addition and subtraction "tests" and graph our personal growth charts.
Please check out all the new links for many websites which teach first grade Georgia Performance Standards knowledge and skills.
