Physical Education Curriculum
The physical education content areas are listed below for the first semester. Under each content area are selected benchmarks to be cover in the curriculum. Recognizing the fact that students progress at different rates, emphasis is on learning and understanding the cues necessary to perform the skills.
Kindergarten and First Grade students are engaged in the following areas: 1. Pathways (straight, curved, and zigzag) 2. Dribbling the ball (two hand bounce and then one hand) 3. Educational dances (involving different beats to varying tempos) 4. Locomotor movements (walk, run, gallop, skip, slide, hop and jump) 5. Non-locomotor movements (bend, twist, push, pull, and stretch) 6. Throwing and catching (variety of objects) 7. Sportsmanship, rules, and etiquette that are safe and effective for specific activity situations. All the skills mentioned above are incorporated into large games, stations, and cooperative teams.
Second and Third Grade students are engaged in the following areas: 1. Dribbling the ball (one hand and alternating hands) 2. Educational dances (involving different beats to varying tempos) 3. Throw and catching (using overhand throws for distance ) 4. Volleying the ball (in succession with other students) 5. Weight transfer and balance (transfer weight from one body part in a variety of ways) 6. Sportsmanship, rules, and etiquette that are safe and effective for specific activity situations. All the skills mentioned above are incorporated into large games, stations, and cooperative teams.
Fourth and Fifth Grade students are engaged in the following areas: 1. P. E. Challenges (jump rope for 90 seconds, hula hoop for 30 seconds) 2. Cooperative Team Relays (survivor challenges) 3. Team sports (soccer and volleyball) 4. Educational dances with repeated patterns. 5. Kicking and punting where the students learn to kick at large target area from a distance. 6. Throwing and catching balls of various sizes and weights. 7. Volleying a lightweight ball back and forth across a line or net to a partner or team (volleyball). 8. Sportsmanship, rules, and etiquette that are safe and effective for specific activity situations. All the skills mentioned above are incorporated into large games, stations, and cooperative teams.
