Harlem Middle School Cheerleaders
HMS Cheerleading Squad Rules And Demerit System
Cheerleaders must maintain unity and fairness as a group. Every member is encouraged to do his or her part and contribute to the success of the squad. A demerit system is our means to ensure this cooperation. The sponsor upon his or her judgment that a squad member has violated a rule or regulation shall issue demerits. A cheerleader's year begins after try-outs.
• Any rules or regulations not followed will result in demerits, suspension, or dismissal from the squad, depending on the degree of the offense.
• Each Cheerleader will have a sheet of paper in the cheerleading notebook. Any offense will be written and dated in the notebook and the cheerleader will sign, recognizing that the event written is factual.
• Each Cheerleader is allowed a maximum of ten (10) demerits. A total of eleven (11) demerits will result in dismissal from the squad.
• Understanding the value of everyone’s time, every effort will be made to let practice out at the scheduled time and to return to the school by the scheduled time from anything off campus. In return, it is expected for parents/guardians to make every effort to pick up their child at the scheduled time. A 15-minute leeway is acceptable, however, after 15 minutes; the cheerleader will receive 2 demerits, for the first offense. The second offense will result in 2 demerits and being benched during the next game. The third offense will result in the cheerleader being dismissed from the squad.
• Practices are closed; this includes the four days before tryouts. Parents, boyfriends, siblings, and friends are not allowed at practices.
• As a cheerleader who projects happiness, enthusiasm, energy, and optimism, anything negative said about one cheerleader to another is prohibited. Everyone who is on the squad is an important part of a very big team and no one is worth more than the next, so no one will be permitted to bring destruction to a well-balanced squad.
• Any cheerleader missing the practice before a game, unless given permission, will not be permitted to cheer at the game. Only excused for a death in the family or an illness with a doctor’s note. (BENCHED)
• Any cheerleader absent from school during the day of a game, unless given permission by the principal, will not be permitted to cheer at the game. (BENCHED)
• Cheerleaders are expected to wear appropriate clothing. Practice attire includes gym shorts, t-shirts, and tennis shoes (clothing should meet HMS dress code). At games and performances cheerleaders are expected to wear the correct uniform. Hair is to be worn in a ponytail during practice, games, and performances. Jewelry is not permitted; this includes any body piercing, at any cheerleading event, i.e. – practice, games, or performances.
• Cheerleaders are responsible for anything of value they have with them. The cheerleading sponsor is not responsible for any lost jewelry or anything else of value.
• Nail polish is also not acceptable, not including a clear coat.
• Chewing gum is prohibited at any cheerleading event.
• Cheerleaders should be prepared to begin by the scheduled time of practices, games, and performances.
• Practices are vital. No talking between cheers. There are a lot of cheerleading areas that need to be addressed during practice so everyone must be focused on learning quickly and as effectively as possible.
• Cheerleaders failing to learn cheers and other required materials will be pulled from the performance. (BENCHED)
• When a cheerleader is benched for a game, she is to sit in the stands during that game in uniform.
• If a cheerleader is suspended from school twice during a semester; he or she shall be automatically dismissed from the squad.
• If a cheerleader is placed in "In- House" suspension more than two times during a semester, he or she will be automatically dismissed from the squad. • FIGHTING WILL NOT BE TOLERATED! Fighting is reason for immediate dismissal from the squad.
• Cheerleaders shall be dismissed for the following offenses: drinking alcohol, improper language, and public display of affection, smoking, and the use of controlled substances, on or off campus.
The cheerleader will be removed from the squad for the following actions:
The cheerleader receives 3 after school detentions for conduct.
The cheerleader receives 2 in-school suspensions or out of school suspensions.
The cheerleader misses 2 practices that are unexcused by the coach.
