| Lewiston Elementary is proud to have been a 2003-04 participant in Children's Choices |
Welcome to the Media Center The Lewiston Elementary Media Center opened its doors in August, 2003 with all brand new books and adds a few hundred new books annually. The media center has a fully automated check-out system and six computer work stations for student use. An audiobook collection is currently being developed. Families may check out these audiobooks for travel use over long breaks.
Students at Lewiston Elementary participate in Reading Counts, a computerized reading program which enables students to earn points by reading books and taking quizzes about what they read. Teachers conference with students to set individualized, monthly or quarterly point goals. Students who meet their goals each month for the entire school year are honored at the Roaring Readers Celebration sponsored by the media center in May.
Parent Volunteers Needed Parent volunteers are needed to help set up and help with sales during Bookfairs. With our rapidly growing student population, weekly volunteers are also needed on a regular basis to shelve books. Other projects involving data collection and information searches are occasionally available and can be done from home. Please let the Media Center know if you are willing to help in any of these areas. |
Media Center Sponsored Activities Annual Events
The media center sponsors both a fall and spring bookfair, and a visiting author or illustrator each school year. The visiting author/illustrator for the 2007-08 school year will be Chris Soentpiet. (See Visiting Author and Illustrator link on the left for more information about Mr. Soentpiet and past visiting authors.)
Special activities are planned annually for Children's Book Week in November.
In March, students at Lewiston Elementary participate in Read Across America Day with special school-wide activities. This past spring year, a school challenge was issued to have students, teachers, and visitors read 600 Dr. Suess books in just one day. They far exceeded the goal and read 832! An additional 342 Dr. Suess books were read for homework. Wow! The 2007 goal will be to read 900 Dr. Seuss books in one day. This event will take place on March 3, 2008.
Students in grades K - 5 also participate in the Georgia Book Award program and vote for the state book award. Voting will take place on March 3rd.
Recycling Projects The Media Center sponsors three recycling projects. These are printer ink cartridges (all brands), cell phones (all brands), and newspaper/magazine collection. Send ink cartridges and old cell phones to the Media Center or drop in the collection bin outside the door. A bin is located behind the school for newspapers and magazines. Proceeds from these projects are used to purchase additional Reading Counts quizzes.
