Photography Syllabus: Semester 1 click here Welcome to the world of Photography at Greenbrier High School! In this class you will be introduced to photography as an art form. It covers the historical development of photography and photographic design and its cultural influences. Students are introduced to both 35mm and digital photography with a strong emphasis on safe use of photographic materials and equipment. This class builds on many of the concepts and media used in Art 291-292 (Art 1). I look forward to working with each of you as you develop and explore your creativity and artistic goals!
Parents and Students: Please read the following very carefully to be sure you understand the demands of this unique and exciting class.
Assignments: Assignments range from written critiques, studio projects, group projects, and research presentations. Students are expected to participate every day. Ample time will be given during class; however, for students who need extra time to work, there will be opportunities before or after school to finish projects and work in the darkroom (this must be arranged ahead of time). Some projects/assignments will need to be completed at home. All assignments are expected to be finished by the given due date, so time management is extremely important in this class. Students are required to have a 3-prong binder to keep class notes, assignments, written critiques, project sketches, negatives and photos. Students are expected to have their notebook with them every day.
Grading: In addition to written assignments, notebooks, and studio projects, students will be evaluated on the basis of class participation and classroom maintenance/clean up. To participate, a student must be present, awake, and actively working in the classroom. Poor attendance will be reflected in the final grade; if a student is absent, he or she will be expected to make up the studio time missed if necessary, or it may adversely affect the participation grade. Five points will be deducted from the class participation grade for any unexcused absences. In order for an absence to be excused, the student must bring a note/admit slip within two days of the absence. In addition to attendance, students are expected to respect the shared space of the classroom and will be given specific duties to help maintain the classroom and darkroom. As a creative community, we must depend on one another to take ownership of the working environment. Each student is expected to clean up messes that they create, and will be graded accordingly.
Class Structure: First Semester: During the first and second nine weeks, students will be learning the basic fundamentals of photography (terms, history, design concepts, etc.) and will be creating their own pinhole camera with which to take pictures. Second Semester: During the third and fourth nine weeks students will be taking pictures with 35mm film, developing film, and printing and developing pictures in the darkroom. Students will be required to turn a final portfolio that will include photographs and projects from throughout the year. Students will end the year by researching an assigned photographer and presenting him or her to the class.
Required Supply List: •Three prong 1” binder with dividers (for prints, negatives, assignments)
•1-2 rolls of paper towels
•Gladware/Tupperware container for mixing/storing wet paint
Recommended Supply List: •35mm camera with manual capabilities--it is strongly recommended that each student has his/her own camera, although this will not be needed until second semester. There are six cameras that can be checked out from school, but they are available on a first come first serve basis. A student is responsible for the camera and all accompanying equipment (tri-pod, etc.) while it is checked out. If a camera is broken, lost, or stolen while it is signed out, it will be that student’s responsibility to replace any and all equipment lost or damaged. •Oversized button-down shirt—optional, but recommended because photography chemicals stain clothes and do not come out in the wash. •Students will be given enough film and paper to complete assignments; however students must be very careful and frugal with these supplies. If students use up, loose, or damage supplies before assignments are complete, they will need to replace them at their own expense (Wolf Camera sells the film and paper we use). Remember that paper and film are sensitive to light and heat, so they are not to be left in a car or locker where someone will expose them by accident. It is also recommended that students do not leave these supplies in the classroom where they may be a temptation to other students. When photo supplies are distributed, it is recommended that they are kept at home in a safe air-conditioned place until their assigned darkroom day.
