Buzzell's Assignment Page
homework blackboard Students in 5th grade have homework Monday-Thursday. We are working with them to develop good study skills and independent work habits. Fifth graders are encouraged to take responsibility for their work and study each day.
All students have a planner where they should record their homework assignments for each class. The teachers post homework in the same place in each classroom and give students time to copy it down. If your child is struggling to keep up with assignments, the teachers will be happy to initial the planner daily.

Observe Your World!
SCIENCE
Students should study vocabulary and concepts from their green folders. Ask your child what they did in science. Do not accept "Nothing" as a reply. Ask them to show you their green folder. Was anything new added today? What was the essential question for the day?

Getting into the practice of nightly review will make test preparation a breeze! Short 5-10 minute study sessions throughout the week will eliminate cramming before a test.

READING
My goal in reading is to develop a love for reading among my students and help them become life-long readers. Therefore, my students are required to read 20 minutes every evening Monday-Thursday and record it in their reading logs. This also ensures that they are meeting the standard that states they should read a million words during the school year. Students' reading logs are checked randomly throughout the nine weeks to ensure they are reading. They are also working to earn eight patches from the media center in various genres. Ask your child what patch he/she is trying to earn. Children learn to read (even better) by listening to a fluent reader, reading alone, and reading with a group. Avoiding reading because it is difficult or frustrating is not the answer. Listen to your child read, ask questions, and read to them! You can help make a difference.

Know the 6 Traits!
WRITING
In writing, we will complete various assignments as we develop the six traits of writing: ideas and content, organization, sentence fluency, word choice, voice, and conventions. I do not assign too much writing outside the classroom as I want to be certain of my student's individual ability. We may work on a piece for several weeks in class before it is ready for a final copy. Occasionally, students will have to create a first draft or complete the final product. Check your child's planner.

SPELLING
Click here to see the 50 words
My students start out the year using Nifty Thrifty 50 words. This list of words teaches root words and affixes. When they learn to spell all 50 words, they can apply that knowledge to help them spell and apply meaning to many more words by rearranging the affixes. Homework varies each day. See your child's planner. Test on Friday
Once we have completed the list of 50, students will begin to use Wordly Wise. Look for this separate spelling/vocabulary book. Homework will be to complete exercises A-D by Friday. (A-Monday, B-Tuesday, C-Wednesday, D-Thursday)
