Students are given the opportunity to read AR books everyday. They are encouraged to read AR books both at school and at home. When they read books at home they are asked to fill out a special slip that require a parent’s signature. The top of the slip exclaims, “I’m ready to take an AR test!” Students check out new books as soon as they complete an AR test! It’s a wonderful cycle that promotes great reading habits and ensures that the students are learning the importance of reading comprehension. Each student has a goal set every four weeks. When the class reaches 250 points, 500 points, 750 points and 1000 points they earn a day filled with celebration activities! Congratulations to Shanyia! She was the first student in our class to earn 100 points! The class has been working hard to earn 1,000 points. They reached this goal on March 3rd!

Every day the students are working in an individualized math program called Accelerated Math. The program is designed so that each student can work on his/her own pace to learn and master first grade math objectives. Students use scan cards to record their answers. Based on their performance, the computer program lets them know if they need more practice or if they are ready to take a test on the objectives. It also has a built-in spiral review component that measures whether or not they remember how to complete similar problems throughout the year. As students master objectives they have the opportunity to earn points. A classroom chart is kept to track progress. Students also have an opportunity to work on Math Facts in a special program called Math Facts in a Flash.James Robert was the first student in first grade to master all 44 levels including multiplication, division, fractions and decimals!
