| I would teach children music, physics, and philosophy; but most importantly music, for in the patterns of music and all the arts are the keys of learning. -- Plato |

INTRODUCTION |
| First through fifth grade music classes are taught with an emphasis in the Orff-Schulwerk philosophy. Children are encouraged to participate in music making in a variety of ways. We begin with activities that are familiar to children: speech play with rhymes, movement exploration, children's song and games, and using the body as an instrument. Rhythm and melody are developed from this play and transferred to specially designed percussion instruments, such as xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels, as well as recorders. The students play and improvise rhythms, melodies, and accompaniments. Singing, speech play, movement exploration, games, improvisation, and playing instruments, are some of the ways that children are involved in music-making, enabling them to learn visually, aurally, and kinesthetically. |
GENERAL INFORMATION |
All music classes meet once every six days. First through fifth grade classes are 50 minutes in length and are taught by Mrs. Chaly in the music classroom.

FOOTWEAR |
| Students should wear comfortable shoes to class that tie or fasten and have a back to the heel of the shoe. No heels or stacked shoes should be worn. Many of our movment activities require jumping, skipping, hopping, jogging, and quick direction changes. This requirement is for the safety of all students and participation in the class. Thank you for your help! |
