| Overview and Introduction |
This unit is designed to help you understand what structures and functions make an animal an insect. You will study adaptations insects have made over time and how insects contribute to biodiversity and the survival of all animals.
This webquest covers the following Georgia Performance Standards.
S7CS1 - Students will explore the importanhce of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in scinece and will exhibit thest traits in their own efforts to understand how the world works. S7CS2 - Students will use standard safety practices for all classroom laboratory and field investigations. - grasshopper dissection S7CS5 - Students will use the ideas of systemm, model, change, and scale in exploring scientific and technological matters. S7CS6 - Students will communicate scientific ideas and activities clearly. S7CS10 - Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas. S7L1 - Students will ivestigate the diversity of living organisms and how they can be compaired scientifically. S7L4 - Students will examine the dependence of organisms on one another and their environment. S7L5 - Students will examine the evolution of living organisms through inherited characteristics that promote survival of organisms and the survival of successive generations of their offspring. |

Task
You are an entomologist that has discovered a new species of insect. You have studied and observed your insect and are ready to present your findings to the public. Every few years, there is a big insect exhibit and this year you are one of the key speakers. You will present to the pubilc your findings.
Your presentation will include a model of your insect. It can be made from any materials that you have available. It must be neat, creative, and have all appropriate parts that are necessary to prove it is an insect. Your display board will contain the information listed below. It must be neat, attractive, and easy for the public to understand (do not use the long words you scientists are use to using).
Include the following information about your insect.
Insect - What makes your animal an insect? Prove that is an insect by listing the body parts and how they work.
Body Systems - Describe each of the following - digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system, reproductive system, nervous system, and life cycle.
Behaviors - Describe each of the following - territorial behaviors, communication, eating
Habitat - Where does it live? What does it do there?
Environmental Changes - What environmental problems are affecting your insect? (example: global warming, pollution, etc.)
Adaptations - How does your insect adapt to changes in its environment? What special abilities does it have to help it survive?
Importance - Explain to the public why you insect is important. Why should they care about this insect? Why should they protect the insect and not kill it?
Essential questions for the unit will be: (Be prepared to answer these questions at the end of the Web Quest!)
How do the structures of an insect help it to adapt, carry on life processes and survive? What environmental problems affect insects? How are/could insects adapt to these changes? How do insects contribute to the world's food webs and increase biodiversity?
