| Fourth Grade Rocks! |
|
Fourth Graders did a terrific job last month presenting our annual play, "Old TIme Rock and Roll". Everyone enjoyed learning some old and new songs and a little bit about the history of American music. This month we are preparing to support the annual Salvation Army food drive as we learn about what we can do to support those less fortunate. Students are asked to bring in cans of food to donate to the Salvation Army during the week of November 9-13th. We will also celebrate Veteran's Day on the 11th with the school wide ceremony in the morning and activities during Social Studies class. Each student is asked to bring the name of a relative who has served or is currently serving in our military to use as a part of our lesson. The annual Brookwood Art show is coming up in December and students are beginning work on projects, both in the art room and in the regular classroom. Our newest initiative involves the schoolwide intervention from 8:45 to 9:15 each morning. Students are divided into skill groups and each group meets with a teacher to work on a specific activity to either help improve weaker skills or to challenge and stretch already strong skills. We work on math activities Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and Reading on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

| Ecosystems |
|
Students are studying ecosystems and the special adaptations organisms use to survive and meet their needs in a particular system. We have learned about food chains and webs, the energy pyramid, together with the members of each. One of our experiments was to observe how yeast increased the speed of decomposition in a banana. One of our next experiments will be to see how a bird's beak is adapted to the type of food it eats. |

Our new reading program is working well as everyone has learned how to work on a variety of different activities during our daily workshop time. The technology support for this series is terrific and can easily be used at home. In addition, the Inquiry activity for each unit really helps stretch our learning while allowing each student to work both individually and in a small group on a special interest. |

| Real World Math |
|
Currently we are learning to multiply a two digit number by a two digit number. This has been challenging, but everyone seems to be making good progress. One thing we have all discovered is the importance of really knowing the basic facts for multiplication. Once multiplication has been mastered we will move on to long division by both one and two digit divisors. Here again it is most important to really know those basic facts! |

Currently we are learning about the explorers who traveled to find wealth and shorter trading routes. We learned about the types of instruments used to navigate as well as what kinds of goods these explorers hoped to find. Soon we will focus on the early settlements of the United States, the development of a new country, and the expansion westward to new lands. One of the highlights will be learning about colonial society and staging a mock trial like those held during colonial time. |
