Music Notes By: Erin Dibling
All students have been participating in an instrument family unit for the month of January. We began with the string family. Several of our students who are violinist brought in their instruments to share their skill and talent. Thank you to the students for sharing and the parents for letting them bring their instruments to school. The guitar may be the favorite instrument of the string family for the students, followed closely by the harp. The woodwind family was introduced next. We discussed how some families are very similar and others are very diverse. The woodwind family is a diverse family where the family members do not all look similar. We looked at the piccolo and flute and discussed how these instruments belong to the woodwind family because they were originally made out of wood, though they now are mostly made out of metal. We learned about single reed instruments such as the clarinet, bass clarinet, and saxophone. We learned about double reed instruments such as the oboe, English horn and bassoon. The Brass family was the next instrument. Students learned how to buzz their lips to make sound on brass instruments. We learned about the trumpet, trombone, French horn and Tuba. Students practiced buzzing their lips in a tight and loose embouchure. We also learned that all brass instruments are made out of brass. The final instrument family we will go over in our instrument unit is the percussion family. The students are excited about learning about this family because we have many of these instruments in the music room. We will get to play the instruments as we learn about them with this family. When we finish this unit, students should be able to identify the four families of the orchestra. Due to painting of the school the music room will not be available for chorus rehearsal after school. Please be on the lookout for notice as to when chorus rehearsals will resume.
