Learning DOLCH words
DOLCH words are sight words that appear most often when reading. Learning to read these words is very important. Students can read more fluently when they recognize these words. Begin with the Pre-Primer list. Once your child has mastered that list, continue to the other lists. Your child should not have to sound out these words. Our goal is for your child to recognize them instantly (within 3 seconds.) We work on these daily at school, as well. When your child brings home sight word cards with 10 stickers, praise him or her. Post these on the refrigerator or some important place. Please, also continue to review these words.

Math Facts
This year, we will also focus on memorizing addition and subtraction facts to 12. Your child should be able to recognize these facts instantly, too. Try to make practicing math facts fun by making games like memory or match. It is a good idea to either buy or make a deck of math fact flash cards. You can make flash cards by writing the math fact on one side of a 3X5 index card and the answer on the other side. A great way to keep up with these is by putting a hole in the corner of each card and keeping them on a curtain ring. Then you can take them anywhere. Have your child practice these facts in line at the supermarket, in the car, while you are waiting on a sibling at practice, or anywhere that you have a few spare minutes.

Lightning Words
Lightning Words
Review your lightning words by double clicking on the link above. You can play the game "Race the Computer." Try to read the word before it disappears. If you read the word, you win. If it disappears, the computer wins. Keep trying. You will get faster if you practice!

Roaring Readers
What do good readers do when they get stuck on a word?
What Do Good Readers Do?
Parents, when your child gets "stuck" on a word, how should you help them? The PowerPoint slides above list several strategies other than "sound it out" that your child should use when reading. Please look over these and help your child to use these strategies when he or she reads.
FUNtastic Reading
Columbia County Public Libraries
Check out the public library websites above. You can check out books all year, even in the summer! Story time is on Wednesdays at 4 p.m.
I hope that you are reading everyday. You can read anywhere:
On a plane, in the car, by the pool, on a boat, in bed, in a tent, in a treehouse, at a picnic, at the ballpark, on the beach, in a lawnchair, at the library, at the park, on a bus...
Have you read a book in any interesting locations? Have someone take a picture of you reading in a cool place and I will add the picture to our bulletin board.
