Welcome to the Guidance Department!

Ms. Dorsey is available to students to help them develop social, academic, and personal strenghts to become successful and productive citizens. The counseling program is an integral part of the school's total educational program. Counselors provide assistance to students through four primary interventions: counseling(individual and group) classroom guidance, consultation, and coordination. Ms. Dorsey works on behalf of students and their families to ensure that all school programs facilitate the educational process and offer the opportunity for school success for each student.

Counseling
Counseling is a confidential relationship which the counselor conducts with students individually and/or in small groups to help them resolve problems and developmental concerns. Students can be referred by self, teacher, or parent.

Classroom Guidance
This is large group guidance which is provided for all students in the school. It is planned develpmentally appropriate guidance activities designed to foster academic, career, and personal/social development.

Consultation
The school counselor is a certified professional educator who assists students, teachers, parents and administrators. Consulting is one of the three helping processes used by counselors. The counselor receives input from these individuals while also providing valuable
information to them.

Coordination
Coordination is a leadership process in which the counselor helps organize, manage and evaluate the school counseling program. School counselors as a member of the educational team, consult and collaborate with teachers, administrators and families to assist students to be successful. Additional programs I coordinate at the school are Safety Patrol, Gifted Testing, Dragon Days Attendance Club, Student of the Month, the Counseling/Student and Community Involvement Committee, Parents in Education/Reaching for Sucess Mentoring, and Business Partners.

Attendance
Regular school attendance is of utmost importance. Students who are tardy, leave early, and miss a lot of school do not do nearly as well as students who attend school regularly, and receive all classroom instruction and participation. North Columbia students are expected to attend school daily. The Dragon Days Attendance Club is designed to reward students who have perfect attendance. The requirements for this will change for the 2005 - 2006 school year. Not only will students have to be here all day, but they will have to here on time as well.
