Design Elements • Line – the path of a point moving through space • Shape – a two dimensional area formed by one of the other design elements (color, line, etc) o Geometric (square, circle, triangle, etc) o Organic (animal shapes, irregular shapes) • Form- a three dimensional object, having hiegth, width, and depth • Value – the lightness or darkness of an object o Value scale – an arrangement of values from light to dark o hatching, crosshatching, stippling, invented • Space - the area within and around things o Negative – empty space o Positive – filled space
• Texture – the way something looks like it would feel • Color - what the eye sees as light is reflected off an object o Intensity – the brightness of a color (dull or bright) o Value – the lightness or darkness of a color (light blue or dark blue) Tint- a lightened color Shade – a darkened color o Hue – the name of a color (crimson) Primary – the three basic colors, red, yellow, and blue Secondary- orange, green, and purple Tertiary – colors between primary and secondary colors (yellow- orange) Cool – blue, green, purple Warm- red, yellow, orange Complementary- opposites on a color wheel Split complements – colors that are split between complements Monochromatic – shades and tints of one color Polychromatic – many colors
Design Principles • Emphasis – center of interest, what stands out the most • Balance – even arrangement of design elements o Symmetrical o Asymmetrical o Radial • Variety – having differences within an artwork to add excitement • Rhythm- overlapping elements can create a visual beat • Harmony – having similarities within an artwork to create unity • Movement- the path the eye takes through an artwork Perspective • Horizon line • Vanishing point • Above, below, equal to the horizon line o Foreground o Middle ground o Background
