| Welcome to Second Grade! |

I am very excited to teach each of your children this year. It will be a great time in which your child will become more independent and responsible. I encourage you to keep in contact with me throughout the year. Parental Involvement is key to SUCCESS! You definitely have the largest influence on your child as his/her first and most important teacher, and I will work hard to be a positive influence as well. Together we can make a huge difference in the your child's life by working together to meet his individual needs.
Your child will have a purple Daily Folder which will serve as a communicator between home and school. It is very important that your child bring it to school daily. This folder will include important papers such as weekly Spelling and vocabulary lists, newsletters, and conduct logs.
During the second grade, your child should become a strong independent reader. He/She should be able to read chapter books independently by the end of the year. At school, we will be reinforcing phonics and decoding skills and building comprehension skills. At home, your child will need to read 20 minutes daily. A log of this reading will be kept and sent back to school. As with anything, the more practice, the better they will become.
In Math we will work on memorizing the basic facts (addition and subtraction), measurement, place value, addition and subtraction with regrouping, multiplication and division, money, problem solving and fractions. Your child must memorize addition and subtraction facts by the end of the first nine weeks. When tested, he or she should be able to complete 20 problems per minute. Science and Social Studies are taught with a “hands-on” approach and integrated into reading as much as possible. Students usually enjoy learning these new concepts, and they love ivestigating them further using materials in the media center and the Internet.
Thank you for trusting me to provide your child with a great education. I look forward to working with you throughout the year! |
