| Self Selected Reading |
Four Blocks / Balance Literacy/LFS First graders spend a great deal of time practicing skills to help them become better readers. During Guided Reading students are taught a variety of strategies to help them improve their reading comprehension and fluency. Each day they are part of a three ring circus - Read with Mrs. Glass, Read with a partner, or Independent group. Independent reading strategies are developed during self-selected reading time. Students choose from a variety of books based on their reading level. During Journal Writing, students learn how to express their ideas, stay on topic, use proper grammar and mechanics in their writing. In the words block, children learn to read and spell high-frequency words and learn the patterns which allow them to decode and spell lots of words. All the activities in the Words Block are designed to be multilevel. Across each activity, there is something for children to learn regardless of whether they are struggling or accelerated. |
