Program Overview
Weekly Schedule
The K - 5 visual art program evolves from an art discipline based curriculum. Student created projects encompass the elements and principles of art and design. The program follows the National Standards for Art Education as well as Columbia County's Quality Core Curriculum Guidelines(QCC's)for the visual arts. As an art educator, my primary goal is to provide a quality and meaningful experience in the visual arts.

During the course of the year, students examine a range of ancient to comtemporary art. Cultural influences are explored as the visual arts naturally lends itself to history and heritage. Instruction includes art history and is reinforced with content vocabulary. Students work through a variety of media and learn a wide range of art making techniques. Creative thinking and artistic expression are emphasized throughout the student's studio experience.

General Info.
All grades have art throughout the school year. Each class has art once a week. This is a blessing for not all elementary schools have this opportunity. All classes are exploratory in nature. Lessons are geared to challenge students to use problem solving tactics to create a final product based on learned techniques and associated art concepts. Kindergarten through second grades produce more projects and work through introductory concepts and methods. Third through fifth grades have fewer products and have more in depth units of study with reinforcing preliminary activities. As classes complete art projects, they are displayed through out the school for a period of time, then they are sent home. Some student art works are kept for the Student ARTSHOW (toward the end of the year)and then sent home.

Walk with a Line (3rd grade)
As you might already know the art classroom is a very busy place. "Artmom's" (parent-helpers) are always welcome. It is a great way to see and become involved with your child's art making and learning. Assistance is most needed in the K - 2nd grades, yet even the older children enjoy having an extra hand about.

"Wish List"
At times, students will create artworks with materials beyond the traditional artroom supply. It allows students to explore different avenues of creativity and teaches them that artmaking is only limited to their own imagination.

Sculpture, printmaking, masks, collages... can be made from common everyday objects or household materials. Most items that are considered recyclable or even thrown away are very useful in our artroom.

Here is a list of things you could save and donate: Paper towel and/or toilet paper rolls, clean styrofoam meat trays, egg cartons, asst. small boxes (soap or toothpaste size), bottle or milk caps, plastic bread ties, styrofoam packing peanuts, thread or yarn spools, asst. buttons, old file folders, wire hangers, asst. cardboard (flat), asst. styrofoam (flat, block or solid forms), unused twist ties, and pipecleaners.
