Welcome!! |
I am Cassie Mercer, the Speech Pathologist for Stevens Creek Elementary. I hold an undergraduate degree and a Master's Degree from Valdosta State Univeristy in Communication Disorders. I also have a Certificate of Clinical Competence issued by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It is my pleasure to welcome you to a brand new school year!! I am so exicted to have this opportunity to work with you and your child. I anticipate a great year for our students-filled with new experiences and learning adventures. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I strongly feel a student's progress is greatly enhanced by teacher and parents working as a team. |
Speech Tips |
The Speech Impairment Program includes more areas than realized. Here are some of the areas we work with: articulation, receptive language, expressive language, fluency, voice, syntax, semantics, Autism/Asperger's, pragmatics, augmentative/alternative communication.
Here are a few tips when working with your child at home. Use a mirror when working on sound production. Your child can see your modeled production and compare it with their own production. Emphasize the sounds without calling attention to the student. Repeat directions. Secure student’s attention prior to giving directions or addressing topics. Break down directions into smaller units. Give them one direction at a time, then two, etc. Have students repeat the directions back to you. Review main idea of stories and ask questions about the story. Use a variety of terms, synonyms. Highlight parts of the directions.
