The focus of the course is to strengthen organization skills, study skills, grammar and writing skills, and reading comprehension. Vocabulary and its integration in daily communication will also be implemented.

We will be studying a variety of literature this semester. Some of the pieces will come from the literature book; others, from novels. The titles of the major pieces are as follows:
*Mythology: THE ODYSSEY
*LORD OF THE FLIES
*ROMEO AND JULIET
*HOUSE ON MANGO STREET
*one additional novel--TBA

MATERIALS NEEDED:
*1-1 1/2 inch 3 ring binder (This notebook is to be used for Language Arts class only.)
*dividers labeled with the following headings: VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR, LITERATURE, WRITING RULES, GRADED WORK
*loose leaf paper
*pencils, black or blue ink pens
*book cover
*USB/flashdrive (NOT U3)

EVALUATION SYSTEM:
Grades will be calculated using the point system. General guidelines for the various assignments are as follows:
*Daily grades =less than or equal to 25 pts.
*Tests =100 points
*Writing =50-100 points
*Large Projects =100-200 points

Students will be made aware of the number of points each assignment is worth prior to completing each assignment. When applicable, rubrics will be distributed in advance.

NOTEBOOK:
You are required to maintain a literature notebook. This notebook is to be specifically for literature class only. This notebook is to have 5 labeled sections as listed above. All handouts, notes, questions, assignments, graded work, etc. must be labeled with your name, the date, and the assignment title and be in the appropriate section of your notebook. Notebooks will be checked monthly. THIS WILL BE A MAJOR GRADE.

LATE WORK:
Refer to handout regarding departmental late policy. This policy requires student and parent signatures and will be strictly enforced.

MAKE-UP WORK:
Make-up work will be completed on the Wednesday morning following your absence. You may arrive as early as 7:15 a.m. Report to room 114. If you miss the chance to make up the work, you will be given a zero for that assignment.

BATHROOM/LOCKER PASSES:
*You will not be permitted to go to your locker during class.
*You may have 2 Bathroom Passes per semester. If you do not use either of these passes, I will drop your lowest minor grade.
