GOALS FOR AMERICAN LITERATURE
As an instructor of American literature, my goal is to help the students gain a better understanding and appreciation of works and the writers behind American literature. Lessons and activities will be planned for students to draw connections between literature and everyday life. Written homework and out of class reading assignments will be required.

MATERIALS NEEDED DAILY
*Textbooks are needed EVERY DAY. I have none to loan.
***TEXTBOOKS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT. LOST TEXTBOOKS COST $58.95 TO REPLACE. NOVELS COST APPROXIMATELY $15.00 TO REPLACE. DAMAGE DONE TO EITHER NOVELS OR TEXTBOOKS WILL BE ASSESSED AND FINES WILL BE CHARGED ACCORDINGLY.
*Notebook--1 1/2- 2 inch three ringed binder with a good supply of loose-leafed paper
*5 Dividers--label with the following headings: GRAMMAR, WRITING, LITERATURE, VOCABULARY, GRADED WORK
*Writing utensils: blue or black ink pens; pencils
*Highlighters
*USB/flashdrive (NOT U3)
*Book cover

**PLEASE NOTE: Each failure to be prepared for class will result in 30 minutes of detention, which will be assigned at my discretion.

EVALUATION SYSTEM
This year grades will be calculated using the point system. General guidelines for the various assignments are as follows:
*Daily grades(homework[quizzes], classwork, etc.)=less than or equal to 25 pts.
*Tests =100 points
*Writing assignments =50-100 points
*Large projects =100-200 points

Students will be made aware of the number of points each assignment is worth prior to completing each assignment. When applicable, rubrics will be distributed in advance.


NOTEBOOK
You are required to maintain a literature notebook. This notebook is to be specifically for literature class ONLY. This notebook is to have five (5) labeled sections as listed above. All handouts, notes, questions, assignments, graded work, etc. must be labeled with your name, the date, and the assignment title and be in the appropriate section of your notebook. Notebooks will be checked monthly. THIS WILL BE A MAJOR GRADE!

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
General classroom rules are listed below.
*Follow directions first time given.
*Be in your seat by the tardy bell, ready to work.
*Bring all required materials to class--DAILY.
*Sit in your assigned seat.
*Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.

MAKEUP POLICY
Make-up work will be completed on the Wednesday morning following your absence. You may arrive as early as 7:15 a.m. Report to room 114. If you miss the chance to make up the work, you will be given a zero for that assignment.

ACADEMIC HONESTY
Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Students who have used outside assistance on any assignment will receive a zero for that assignment.

BATHROOM/LOCKER PASSES
*You will not be permitted to go to your locker during class.
*You may have 2 Bathroom Passes per semester. If you do not use either of these passes, I will drop your lowest minor grade.

LATE WORK
Refer to handout regarding departmental late policy. This policy requires student and parent signatures and will be STRICTLY enforced.
