FITNESS IS FUN AT STEVENS CREEK!!!

2008-2009 Stevens Creek Physical Education
Barbara Outley and Dave Morgan are the Physical Education teachers, assisted by Traci Arnett our Paraprofessional. Our goal at Stevens Creek is for all of our students to be as active as possible, both during Physical Education class and on their own.
Physical fitness and healthy lifestyles are lifelong commitments. We hope to provide a solid foundation for our children at Stevens Creek. Each class is planned with multiple elements of physical fitness in mind. We emphasize cardio-vascular fitness, strength and endurance and flexibility in a fun and positive environment.
We also strive to provide instruction and activities that will promote and develop motor skills, rhythm, basic sports and athletic skills, teamwork, cooperation and good sportsmanship for all of our students. We strive to make our classes enjoyable and challenging and we aim to promote a positive attitude towards fitness and movement that our students can take along with them throughout their lives.

Fitnessgram Testing
We will be administering the FITNESSGRAM which is a comprehensive fitness assessment battery for youth. It includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests designed to assess cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. The test will be given twice, once in the fall and again in the spring. In order to get the best results from the program, we will ask for the students height, weight, and will be calculating body mass. The data collected during the assessments will be considered personal information, and appropriate care will be taken when administering the tests and discussing the results. Ensuring confidentiality with the assessments will help the students focus on their personal goals and be less concerned about comparisons with others.

Parents
In order to achieve our Physical Education goals, we will need your child to be prepared for participation in our class each day he/she comes. For your child’s comfort and safety, we request the wearing of appropriate attire to class. Tennis shoes (no stacked soles) are strongly recommended. Children wearing sandals, dress shoes or boots to school are asked to bring a pair of tennis shoes to school with them that they can put on for P.E. class. Girls wearing dresses or skirts might want to bring a pair of shorts to slip on underneath the dress or skirt so that they can participate in all activities.
We feel that if your child is at school, he/she should participate in P.E. If your child is sick or injured and you feel he/she cannot participate in class, please send us a note so that we can make sure he/she does not participate that day.
In order for our classes to be conducted safely and efficiently, we ask that you read and discuss the following P.E. rules with your child: 1) all students are expected to listen and follow instructions during the class. 2) We require that students show respect for the teacher, and each other and keep their hands and feet to themselves. 3) Gum, candy, and any other food are not permitted in class. 4) Students are expected to take care of the P.E. equipment. If a problem arises, we will be in touch with you.

Special Activities
Fun Run - each year we have a Fun Run that all students and parents are invited to participate in. We train for this event during P.E. and offer the students 1-5 a choice as to what they do. Kindergarten does a 1-mile run. First and second graders can either do the 1-mile run or the 1-mile relay. Third, fourth and fifth graders can choose between the 1-mile run, the 1-mile relay or the 3-mile relay.

Jump Rope for Heart - each Februrary our school participates in the American Heart Associations Jump Rope for Heart. This event is open to all second - fifth grade students. This event is a fund raiser for the American Herat Association and is held during the students regular Physical Education class.

Field Day - each year we have a school wide field day for each grade level. The kindergarten and first graders go together, the second and third fraders go together and the fourth and fifth graders each have their own day. It is a day of fun filled fitness activities that include many of the childrens favorite games we have played throughout the year.
