Welcome!
Mrs. Morrow's Marvelous Munchkins, 2009-10

Dear Parents,

Team 214 is off to a very good start! I look forward to helping your first grader learn and grow each and every day. To help make this year a success, I am including a few tips below:

*Ask to see your child's selection of a "good fit book" from the school library. If your child struggles with reading the first few pages, then the book needs to be returned as soon as possible and exchanged for one that he/she can read. Encourage your child to figure out unknown words by asking probing questions rather than tell your child the word right away. For example:
1. Ask your child what makes sense.
2. Tell him/her to look at the picture for clues.
3. Sound it out or chunk it.
4. Skip the word, read on to the end of the sentence; then go back and reread.
5. If your child still struggles, then sound it out with him/her and have a follow up discussion about using different strategies to figure out words.
You will have to repeat these strategies over and over again until your child "breaks the code" and is able to self-correct.
*Please use the powerpoint (below) to help your child study and commit the sight words to memory. These are much like math facts; your child simply needs to know them. These words make up most of the words in children's literature, so knowing them will be of huge benefit to your child.
*Speaking of math facts, these need to be practiced regularly. You can play games with your child, such as "concentration." Fact cards can be purchased cheaply at most stores (I've found them at the local Dollar Store and Wal Mart). You can also use Math Facts in a Flash on our school web site to help your child build automaticity with the facts.
*Please check your child's homework each evening.
*Review, sign, and return all tests with your child. If your child misses a word on a spelling test, please have him/her rewrite the word correctly on the test before it is returned.

Thank you for all you do!

Yours in education,

Mrs. Morrow

Dolch Sight Words
DOLCH words are sight words that appear most often in children's literature. Learning to read these words is very important. Students can read more fluently when they recognize these words. Begin with the Pre-Primer list. Once your child has mastered that list, continue to the other lists. Your child should not have to sound out these words. Our goal is for your child to recognize them instantly (within 3 seconds.) We work on these daily at school...please, also continue to review these words at home.
