Syllabus | AP 12 | LNG 407 Mr. David Owen
An AP English course in Literature and Composition should engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students should deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As they read, students should consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as such smaller-scale elements as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. --The College Board

This reading is “required,” not “suggested,” and is an extremely important part of the AP Literature and Composition course. We will use these texts as foundational material for much of what we do; we will begin in August with them, and we will return to them throughout the year. During the first few days of school, students will be evaluated on their knowledge of these texts through objective tests and/or essays. The essays will use prompts modeled after those appearing on the AP Literature test.
*Be sure you read the Seamus Heaney translation. If you cannot find it locally, try Amazon.com or some other online source.
