Syllabus—Writer’s Workshop

The Writer’s Workshop course focuses on exploring and sharpening writing skills in a variety of media. This class is designed to prepare college-bound students for the rigors of college English and the joy of a literate life. We will write EVERY DAY. It may not always be “finished” writing (it may not even be good), but we will write, because that is the only real way to become a good writer.

Essential Question: How can students become proficient with the writing process and make sure that their writing is stimulating, logical, engaging, original, effective, and correct, while realizing the importance of writing as a valuable, lifelong learning skill?

Planning and Conference Times: 3rd period and immediately before and after school

Grading will be based on:
A. Daily Assignments
B. Participation (writing, reading, discussing, editing, etc.)
C. Final products of all writing assignments

The average of all writing assignments will count 80%, and the daily average will count 20% of each nine weeks.

Some things we will cover:
A. Grammar
B. Structure
C. Argument
D. Writing Process
E. Types of Writing
F. Great writers

Materials:
--plenty of pens and #2 pencils
--a notebook or binder with pockets for use in this class only
