What are Daily Folders? Daily Folders are red folders that hold everything you need to keep updated on classroom and school events. It goes home each night and comes back to school everyday. The front pocket (Return to School) is where you can put any money that needs to get to school, notes for the teacher, homework, etc. The back pocket (Keep at Home) is notes from school that do not need to be returned, daily classwork, etc. The pages in the middle will include our weekly newsletter and agenda. The agenda needs to be signed each night after homework and conduct have been checked. The folder should be turned in each morning.
What is AR? AR stands for Accelerated Reader. Each student will be required to read books within their reading range and test on them. The tests are computerized and tests primarily on reading comprehension. The goal is not to make 100 on these tests but instead to score an 80. This shows that the tests are offering a challenge to your child and are not too easy.
When will you know my child is ready to take an AR test? An AR Reading Log can be found in the yellow folder. This folder should go home nightly. When your child is ready to take an AR test initial and date the log. Don't forget to list the title of the book in the log. That way there is not confusion as to which book your child should be testing on. Make sure the book comes back to school too. On specified days, students will be allowed to take AR tests. The goal is to make tests available every day so that when your child is ready to test they are not put on hold. This is accomplished by getting enough parent volunteers during the week to help out with AR tests. Once a student takes a test, he/she will be allowed to check out another AR book and the process repeats itself.
What is the "Signed Papers" folder? This is the blue folder and will go home only on Wednesdays. These papers have been graded and recorded in my grade book as a permanent grade. AR updates can also be found on the cover sheet. Please sign and return the next day.
What are Math Timed Tests? Math Timed Tests consist of 25 math fact problems. The first 'tests' given are facts 0 to 5. Students are given 2 minutes to complete 25 problems. Once a student receives and 'A' on 3 timed tests in a row they will become a Math Star and move up to timed tests 0 to 10. The goal of timed tests is to help students learn math facts and eventually stop using fingers to count.
What is 100 Club? 100 Club is a Pre-Spelling test that is given each Thursday. If a student makes a 100 on this test that grade goes into the grade book and the student does not have to take the real test on Friday. They receive a certificate that goes home on Thursday. Look for it in your child's folder. If you do not see one, chances are they will be taking the test again on Friday. This gives students 2 chances to make a 100 on Spelling tests and helps those students with test anxiety.
Can my child bring a water bottle to school? Absolutely!! A child needs a small amount of water every 15 minutes to keep the brain awake. Please make sure water bottles contain water and no juices.
Why does my child need a daily snack? I am asking that your child bring a snack and drink to school each day Monday thru Thursday. This is an afternoon snack and serves as a nice, quick break for the students. Water is available at school as a drink. Please do not send a snack on Friday. This is Fun Friday snack and is provided by a class parent. Please be advised that no home baked goods are accepted on Friday's or birthdays. They must be store bought or we will not be allowed to partake.
What are sight word tests? Sight word tests are given each week. When learning to read there are many words that do not follow the rules of phonics. Therefore, these words cannot be sounded out. These must be learned and known by sight. Other sight words are everyday words that also need to be learned and known by sight. Look for a word ring coming home each week to help your child learn his/her sight words. There are over 200 words for the year but they are essential to reading fluently which increases reading comprehension.
What is a Word Wall? A word wall is just what it says ~ words on the wall. As weekly sight words are introduced, the words will be added to the wall. Students are encouraged to use the word wall in hopes of making a connection between reading, spelling, and writing.
Can I come read to the class? Parents are welcome anytime to visit the class and especially read to the class. If your line of work relates to our curriculum we would love for you to come in and share your experiences with us. Holidays are a great time to read or do an art activity with the class too. Contact us so that we can schedule a day and time.
Can I have lunch with my child? Yes, parents are encouraged to come a few times a year and have a lunch date with your child. A table is set aside in the lunchroom for these special dates. Your child would love to share with you what they have been learning in class over a big slice of pepperoni pizza.
What is DLR and DMR? DLR is an abbreviation for Daily Language Review and DMR stands for Daily Math Review. These 2 things are completed each morning as morning work. Your child is expected to come in the classroom, turn in his/her Bulldog Book, put away bookbag, use the restroom, and settle in their desks to start this morning work. Students are responsible for keeping up with these 2 papers all week long. They are kept in a work folder they created at the beginning of the school year. The answers are reviewed daily. It is a jump start to Grammar skills and Math skills.
What is Mountain Math? Mountain Math is a Math program that our school uses to help accelerate students in their Math skills. Often times the skills are not known to the student but being that the program is repetitious these skills are picked up quickly. The skills are introduced slowly and not all at once. The students have fun exercising their brains and learning 'hard' math. You will be amazed!!
