BIENVENUE!
Nous parlons français

General Information
With an evershrinking, interdependent world and more opportunities for interaction with citizens of foreign cultures for purposes of business, study, and pleasure, along with current technology such as the Internet, it is becoming increasingly important for English-speaking students to be familiar with other languages and cultures. Students who know a second language have excellent opportunities for employment acquisition and advancement. French is currently the first language of nearly 200 million people worldwide; thousands of them reside here in the United States in Louisiana and the New England area. Learning a second language can be challenging, enlightening and enjoyable.

Learning a new language is similar to learning to play a musical instrument. The more you practice, the more proficient you will become. It is better to drill small portions of material on a regular basis than to wait until a lot of vocabulary has been presented, then try to memorize all of it the night before a graded evaluation.

Instruction will promote strategies designed to develop a four-skills approach to learning French through a variety of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities. The richness and diversity of the French-speaking world will also be included.

Grading Method
The foreign language final course grade will be determined as follows:

Unit Tests 30%
Announced Quizzes 25%
Daily Grades/“Pop” Quizzes 20%
Projects 15%
Class Participation 10%

Because there will be numerous and varied evaulation strategies, no opportunities for "extra credit" will be provided at the end of the grading period.

10 Helpful Hints for Maximizing Your Chances for Success in the French Course
1. Be in class every day.
It is difficult to master a foreign language without constant reinforcement from the teacher and fellow class members. Be present and prompt.

2. When you must be absent, make up missed work immediately.
This will keep your grade from suffering.

3. Pay attention in class.
Try to understand material as it is presented. Make an effort to keep your mind focused on class activities.

4. Ask questions when you don’t understand.
Do not be afraid. Someone else in the class is probably wondering the same
thing that you want to know.

5. Stay on schedule with daily assignments.
You can digest material much better if you avoid “cramming” huge amounts at once.

6. Organize class materials.
Keep French notes, handouts, worksheets, quizzes and tests in a logical arrangement that is easy for you to manage, apart from your other subjects.

7. Review regularly.
The more familiar you become with the vocabulary, grammatical and cultural concepts presented, the more easily you will be able to recall and use them correctly. Concepts build from the simple to the more complex.

8. Look for relationships.
As the work progresses, you should be able to see how concepts in later chapters or levels relate to earlier lessons. You should also be able to relate what happens in French class to what you know from your other classes, even to the larger society.

9. Learn from mistakes.
No one is perfect and all of us will make errors during the year, but we will attempt to avoid the same mistakes again and again.

10. Practice, Practice, Practice in and outside of the classroom.
