Spanish IV Summer Reading
Dear student:
I am very excited about having you in my class. This course is an excellent way to gain further knowledge of the language and a stronger base in your speaking and listening skills. In order to prepare you for the reading that you will be required to complete throughout the year, I would like for you to have summer reading. One of the books I have chosen is a wonderful and meaningful story of social injustice. This will be one of the themes that will be prevalent in many of our novels and short stories. You may purchase this book from amazon.com. Just search in amazon.com and type in Marianela. The book is $8.95(plus shipping and handling) new or you can try and get a used copy at a lesser price. The name of the book is Marianela. The author is Galdos. click here Please see attached picture. The first book at the top of the list is the version that is required. It is bright blue with mountains and a valley and a small town on the front. You will be given a test on this book on the first day of school.

The next requirement will be to download the following story and read it. There are a few activities that you may want to do in order to help you understand the story. *Please keep in mind that the story on the internet does not include the ending. This is not important. You will be tested on the chapters 1-9 that are found on the following website.Click here Download the text. You will tested on comprehension and vocabulary on the third day back after school.
The third assignment is to go to the following websites which will give you some practice quizzes and a good review of the present subjunctive and the preterite. You will be given a quiz on the second day of class over this particular grammar. In order for you to feel completely comfortable, te conviene repasar esta información.

• If you did not take Spanish IV last year, you will be responsible for the following information. I highly suggest that you study these two topics thoroughly as I will not spend time introducing you to them: The Spanish Civil War, what caused it, who were involved, who was the dictator afterwards. Also please read about Ana Maria Matute and Federico Garcia Lorca. Just know something about them and their writing styles. Also, you may want to go to the above websites or others and become familiar with the past subjunctive. The students who took Spanish IV last year have already been introduced to this grammatical mood.
