What is the Early Intervention Program?
Although children enter a grade level at a certain chronological age, they may differ greatly in their individual development and life experiences. The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is designed to serve children who are at risk of not achieving the standards at their academic grade level. The small classroom setting that EIP provides allows the students to get additional assistance in reading and math in order to be more successful in the classroom. The program is designed to encourage and support students by helping them obtain the necessary academic skills to reach grade level performance.

Reading
Kindergarten and first grade EIP classes use the Jack and Jilly program which provides a good foundation for learning letter recognition, letter sounds, and reading. This program uses games and various other activities to teach sight words, and it also includes daily reading practice. Each student works at their individual level and pace.

Grades 2 through 5 use Read Naturally to improve fluency as well as comprehension. Each day a student listens to a short non-fiction story on a CD, then times himself as he practices reading the story. Once completing five practice times, the student charts his progress and is able to see his growth. As the student practices reading the same story repeatedly, his WPM (words per minute) usually increases each time. Not only does this improve the child's fluency, but it also builds self-esteem. Once completing the practice times, the student answers comprehension questions about the story and also writes a summary of what he read.

Math
First grade math uses Investigations. This program includes daily practice with story problems as well as hands-on activities to teach basic math skills. It helps students acquire an understanding of math concepts and teaches them math language.

Number Worlds is the program being used for math in second through fifth grade EIP classes. Each lesson includes a warm up used to review skills learned in previous lessons. The lesson follows the warm up and engages students by using manipulatives and teaches students to communicate mathematically. Students then reflect on the lesson by summarizing what they learned. This provides an opportunity for them to show their understanding of the lesson concepts. At the end of each lesson an informal assessment is used to analyze student understanding and plan for additional support if needed.
