Reading - 5th grade places an emphasis on the importance of reading everyday. The more you read, the better reader you become! AR goals for the nine weeks will be set during the first week of each nine weeks. Each student will have an AR folder to record daily pages read and test scores. This folder will also contain your child's AR goals for both points and percentage correct on tests. 15 minutes of AR reading homework is expected to be completed and recorded each night! We will also read for AR in the classroom each day. Our goal is not only to earn our points goal, but also to keep our average percent correct at 85% or higher. English and Writing - 5th graders have already acquired many of the skills required to be good writers. Our goal in 5th grade is to reinforce and strengthen these skills In English, we are getting ready for the 5th grade writing test. We will also write a variety of samples in our journals this year. These include poetry, persuasive, descriptive, informative, and narrative writing. The 5th grade writing test will be on March 5th. Please mark this date on your calendars!
Spelling - Weekly spelling units will focus on word patterns and phonics.
Math - Success in 5th grade mathematics depends on a solid knowledge of the basic math facts. We will focus on this skill as we begin our year and will continue to stress the importance of math facts throughout the year. A great place to review math facts can be found at www.multiplication.com. This site offers games to challenge both memory and speed of recognition. We will continue to work on long division, probability, fractions, measurement, and geometry! There are so many exciting things to learn before the end of the year!

Organization is the key to success in 5th grade. Students will have binders organized by subject. The 5th grade also utilizes take home folders that include daily assignment sheets, missing assignment sheets, and pockets for school communications and graded papers. Please check your child's binder and take-home folder nightly. This will allow both you and your child to stay on top of classroom progress and upcoming events. |

Reading is a critical life skill. In 5th grade we encourage students to meet their accelerated reader point and percentage goals. Not only does AR count as a reading grade each nine weeks, but it also improves reading skill and accuracy throughout the year. The 5th grade teachers celebrate the huge accomplishment of meeting student goals in several ways. Reading Roundup - Each nine weeks we bring our sleeping bags, snacks, and a great book so that we can curl up and read, read, read! AR Parties - Students who meet both point and % goals are invited to attend a special AR party each nine weeks. A special thanks to those parents who volunteered to provide snacks and drinks! Honor's Day Recognition - Students who meet both their point and % goals in all four nine weeks will be recognized at our end of the year Honor's Day ceremony. Remember to read every night and record your pages in your AR folder! You can do it!!!! |

As the weather gets warmer, remember to check the dress code in your BRE Student Handbook. No strappy tank tops or short-shorts for girls. Boys' pants and shorts should fit appropriately. A belt should be used if necessary.
P.E. requires sneakers!!! Do not wear strappy sandals on days that students have P.E. This is for the safety of the students. |
