Message from the Coach!

This year I will be teaching "pull-out" Health classes to the 6th and 8th graders, however, 7th grade will have their Health instruction incorporated into the PE class time. This is because I am the only female PE teacher here in the afternoon. While this may seem a bit confusing, trust me when I say that every student at LMS will get the full thirty hours of Health this year. We just have to make some accomodations for our situation. Each 6th and 8th grade student will be assigned to a thirty day period some time throughout the year, based on when they are in the PE Class. The 7th grade students will be pulled out once a week for the course of several weeks in order to cover the necessary information.

Health Information- Regular Classes
8th Grade:
Units to be covered: Grooming (Skin Cancer);Conception and Pregnancy; Growth and Development; Abuse and Violence.
During each unit students will have assigned vocabulary words as well as some worksheets and review questions. Most work will be started in class be but will be completed at home if necessary. There will be some type of assessment done for each unit that will vary from a simple vocabulary test to short answer quizes.
Current group is completing the Abuse and Violence (which is being presented via PowerPoint presentation).

6th grade:
Units to be covered are the GREAT program (with CC Sheriffs Office); Grooming; Weather Safety and Substance Abuse Prevention.
There is no book to take home in 6th grade. All of the chapters are available for use in class and most assignments will also be done in class. Currently the group is beginning the Weather Safety unit and are preparing a "Weather Broadcast" to perform for the class to teach a specified section of the chapter.
Officer Leslie Wilkie of the Columbia County Sheriff's Department is coming on most Monday's and Wednesday's to present the G.R.E.A.T. program. This is the successor to the old DARE program that many are familiar with from elementary school. The focus is on teaching students to make positive choices in their behavior and friendships.

7th Grade:
Units to be covered are First Aid and Safety, Grooming and Wellness and Eating Disorders. Each unit will have a short activity or writing assignment to assess student knowledge of the material covered.

Spanish/Health Students

The Spanish classes in 8th grade will take Health during the first three weeks of each nine weeks, on the days they would normally be in PE. They will follow the same program as the regular 8th grade groups but will do one unit per nine weeks to meet the requirements for the program.

New Grading Policy for Health and P.E.
With the use of I-Grade this year, we want to make all attempts to update grades for our students as quickly as possible. However, unlike the core level classes, PE and Health has a different procedure for establishing grades. Grades will be averaged as follows:
For the course of the nine weeks, grades will be posted at two weeks, four weeks, six weeks and at the end of the ninth week. This means that the first grade will be a two week grade and counts 200 points. The same goes for the four weeks grade and the six weeks grade. The grade for weeks 7 through 9 will count 300 points.
Students are graded on dressing out and participating. If they do not do these, they will lose 10 points for each infraction. For example, if a student does not dress out or participate for one day, their two week grade drops by 20 points to 180. This is the same as a 90 on a 100 point scale.

When students are in the six weeks Health block, grades may be taken daily, based on assignments given. These grades will then be averaged every two weeks and posted to I-Grade in the same manner as the PE grades. When appropriate, comments may be made to indicate any problems your student might be having in class or to show assignments that are missing.

Discipline Procedures
The Connections program of LMS has set up the following guidelines for handling discipline in the classrooms and gym:
1. On the first offense, the student will recieve a verbal warning.
2. On the second offense, the student's parents will be called to advise them that the student needs to be reminded to follow class directions.
3. On the third offense, the student will be assigned to an "in class" detention to be determined by the teacher.
4. On the fourth offense, the student will be sent to the administration for further discipline procedures based on a repeated pattern of misbehavior.
Additional discipline problems will continued to be referred to the office for disposition.

Coaching - not anymore!
Although the kids aren't very happy with me I have made the decision to officially retire from the coaching profession this year. I am turning it over to the "younger" folks! It has been a pleasure coaching the students over the past years.... I am off into the sunset on my Harley!
