 |
Introduction |
| Approximately one of every 10 people in the United States has a speech, language, or hearing disorder. These delays and impairments range from simple sound errors to severe problems communicating basic needs. If you think your child has an articulation, language, voice, or fluency disorder, please contact his/her classroom teacher. |
Speech and Language Disorders |
| A child with an ARTICULATION disorder has difficulty producing sounds correctly. Correct sound production is a developmental process and many children mispronounce sounds in their early school years. If a student does not master a sound by the average age of customary sound acquisition, he/she may have an articulation disorder and should be referred for a speech evaluation. A child with a LANGUAGE disorder may have difficulty understanding or expressing vocabulary, grammar, or wants and needs appropriate for his/her age. A VOICE disorder is a problem with pitch, loudness, or quality that calls attention more to the voice than to the message. STUTTERING is a condition which occurs when the flow of speech is broken by abnormal stops, repetitions, or prolongations of sounds or syllables. Many young children experience normal disruptions in fluency as they learn to speak, particularly between the ages of 2 and 5 years. |
