Classroom Management System
If you would like to check on your child's progress (academic or behavioral), please call the school and leave me a message that includes your name, your child’s name, and your telephone number.

Morning Routine:

1. Be in class on time.
2. Unpack items you will need for the day and place them in your desk.
3. Place your backpack, lunch, and/or jacket in its designated spot.
4. Please do not leave items on the floor around your desk.
5. Turn in any notes from home or lunch money in the basket on my desk.
6. Make sure you have 2 sharpened pencils for the day.
7. Sit quietly at your desk and work on any unfinished assignments
and/or morning work.

**Please read all rules and procedures in your student handbook.

Class Rules:

1. Be polite.
2. Listen and follow all directions.
3. Use good self-control.
4. Show respect for self, others, and property.
5. M.Y.O.B. (Mind Your Own Business)

Consequences:

The class rules are posted at all times. A signal will be given to children who are off task. If a child continues to be off task, these consequences will follow.

Yellow – Verbal Warning
Blue – 5 minutes of recess taken away
Orange - 10 minutes of recess taken away
Brown – No recess / call home
Red – Office visit

Incentives:

Good behavior is wonderful, however, it is not something that should be consistently rewarded. I try to teach students that obedience is their responsibility. As adults we do not get rewards for being honest or telling the truth. Second grade students need to understand their responsibility to have and show exceptional character. When a student does something extra special or shows exceptional character in a certain situation, I will reward them with a “Purple Card”. All second grade students who have earned a purple card will be invited to a “purple slurple” party. These parties will be given every other month.

Classroom Routines:

To get my attention –

Pencil in the air: “I need to sharpen my pencil, please.”
Two fingers in the air (Peace sign): “Restroom, please.”

When you are absent-

All missed work and assignments will be placed in your cubby. I will be available for reteaching new standards. You will be expected to return all missed work within three days. Failure to return work may result in a lower grade. Exceptions will be made in extreme circumstances.

Bathroom-

We are lucky to have a classroom restroom. Students will be allowed to use the restroom as needed. The classroom door will display a sign labeled Vacant or Occupied. The students will be taught these words and are expected to follow them respectfully. Please let me know if your child has a medical concern that I should be aware of in this area.

Tests and Weekly Progress Reports

A Weekly Study Guide/Newsletter will be sent home in your child’s O.W.L Binder on Monday. This will serve as an agenda for the week. Test dates will be given in plenty of time for you to review study guides. Graded test papers and weekly progress reports will be sent home on Wednesdays in the O.W.L Binder. Please review these and return them signed by Friday. Thanks for helping us teach responsibility.

Spelling Tests will be given weekly. The words will be given to students on Monday, a pretest will follow on Thursday, and a final test will be given on Friday. Those students who spell 100% correct on Thursday, will be exempt from the final test on Friday. Extra Credit may also be available on spelling tests. Students will also be expected to read vocabulary words on Friday. Reading tests will be given weekly or after the completion of a novel unit. Math tests will be given on a weekly or biweekly basis. A study guide may be assigned for homework the night prior to the test. Social Studies and Science tests will be given after the completion of a unit. Study guides will also be available.

Dismissal

If for any reason your child needs to be picked up before 3:30, please report to the office and sign him or her out. For bus riders, a note is necessary if your child is not to ride the bus on a particular day. A note will also be necessary if there is a change for car riders. Unless your child has a written note (or phone call to the office), I will be forced to send your child home as normal. Safety is most important.

Please! Please! Please!
Do not allow your child to bring toys to school (unless a note has been sent home requesting them for an activity). Toys will be taken and returned to parents only.

Homework

I strongly encourage parents and students to read the Second Grade Homework Sheet/Newsletter daily. Remember these will be sent home in the O.W.L Binders on Monday. These guides will show you the weekly spelling words, reading stories, math skills, and upcoming tests/events. I ask that you allow your child to read orally for at least 10 minutes a day. This reading may be from our reading story, library book, or personal book at home.

Homework should be placed in homework folders daily, completed, and returned the next day. Failure to return homework will result in a lower grade. Homework assignments are limited, but are necessary to reinforce your child’s learning and understanding of lessons. Failures to complete and return homework will result in the loss of recess time.

Please feel free to contact me at school if you have any questions or concerns. I will be glad to discuss your child’s progress at any time, but if possible, please schedule a conference. All unexpected visitors during the school day must be brief due to responsibilities to students. I am looking forward to a great year!
