 Reading is the key! |

We are working on our new theme - Our Neighborhood at Work. The new word wall word chart with our high frequency words should come home soon. Put this in a safe place and practice those words! |
 Spelling and Phonics |
Phonics and Phonemic Awareness
We have covered all the short vowel sounds and most of the consonants. We are working on digraphs - th, sh, ch and wh. We are working on r controlled vowels - ar, or, er, ir and ur. We are also starting on the long vowel sounds. This reading series really works those decoding skills! |
 Learn your math facts! |
Math
We have really worked on addition and subtraction. We will work on addition and subtraction facts all year. You can help by doing flash cards with your child. Memorizing their math facts is very important. We have also completed a chapter on Graphs and Tables. Your child should know what a tally table is as well as concrete, picture and bar graphs. We are now starting on the math chapters for numbers to 100. We will be in these chapters for about 3-4 weeks. We work on counting and writing by ones, twos, fives and tens. We work on place value, number order, greater than and less than and rounding to the nearest ten. |

Do you know any folktales? |
Social Studies
We have switched to Social Studies for the next few weeks. We will be learning about folktale heroes. The ones we will read about are Johnny Appleseed, Davy Crockett, Paul Bunyan, John Henry and Annie Oakley. We want to look at why they seemed bigger than life and what they meant to America's national heritage. We will follow up folktale heroes with patriotism. We will talk about patriotic words, patriotic songs and our country's patriotic symbols. |
