Spring is in the air! |
Welcome to 1st Grade!
Spring has arrived! And we are in the last stretch here for first grade. It is the 4th nine weeks. It is hard to believe that this year is almost over. Keep in mind that Spring Fever happens to us all. Encourage your children to stay focused and expect them to continue to do their best. We are still taking grades! CRCT testing is almost here, too. It is the week of April 21 - 25th. It is very important that your child BE PRESENT and BE ON TIME during that week. Once testing starts, they will not be allowed to come into the classroom if they are late. They will have to be pulled to do a make up of what they miss later in the day or another day. That is not the best situation for them at all. Also be sure they eat a good breakfast each morning and get plenty of sleep the night before! |

 We love to READ! |
Language Arts
We are finishing up the last story in our current reading book. It is called Busy Buzzy Bee! We will begin the next reading book right after spring break. We will not be able to do all the stories in the last reading book. There just aren't enough weeks. We have tried to choose the most interesting ones to be sure to cover. During the last two weeks we will combine reading and science and do a big unit on BUGS using Eric Carle books. It is a LOT of fun! |

 Spelling and Phonics |
Spelling
Spelling words for the stories in our last reading book will look a little different. We will have the basic words, some review words from the Word Wall and a bonus word. They can choose to do the bonus word or not. If they get the bonus word correct it is worth two extra points. So they could possibly make a 102 on their spelling test!!!! Be sure to study for the spelling tests. We will not have a spelling test during CRCT week. We will not have a spelling test the last two weeks of school! |

 Can you count money? |
Math
Math has been all about MONEY lately. And we will continue to work on money. We will also be working on telling time on the hour and 1/2 hour. We will end up the year with working on math facts higher than 10. We will also do a lot of review to be sure all the first grade skills we have covered are reinforced and truly learned. Our MATH WARS teams continue to do awesome. Team A won, then Team B, then back to Team A and Back to Team B and then back to Team A again! It's a pattern!!!! |

 Butterflies are coming! |
Science
We have finished up our unit on Food and Nutrition. Our last few weeks after spring break will be all about Butterflies and Bugs! We will actually get to SEE the life cycle of a butterfly happen before our very eyes in the classroom. We will extend our learning about butterflies to include all other insects and bugs that don't fit into the insect category. It is a fun unit. We will use some books by Eric Carle the last two weeks and make reading and science all one big, fun unit! |

 FYI |
Things you need to know:
-Dress for the WEATHER! We try to go outside for a little while EVEN on cold days!!!! -Watch those calendars and LOOK for GREENS! -We do have a SNACK time each day. They need to bring their own snack. NO candy or sodas allowed. -Water bottles are allowed, but they need to be small and simple. -LABEL all money that comes to school. We collect money for lots of different things and most of the time the children cannot remember what it is for. -REMEMBER I must have a note from you if your child is to go home a different way than they normally do. I CANNOT take their word for it. -If your child is ABSENT they need a written excuse for the absence. It needs to come with them the day they return to school. We keep a careful watch over tardies and absences! -School starts at 8:30. They are TARDY if they arrive after the 2nd bell which rings at 8:35! Be ON TIME! -PE for us this year is Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Please be sure your child wears appropriate shoes for PE. -LUNCHES-Keep up with your child's lunch money. They really appreciate your keeping your account current. If your account is low, you will receive a balance notice! - HOMEWORK is due back the next day! Help your child keep up with this and start a good routine for putting it back in their folder! - READ the newsletter. It will help you know what is going on in our class and at Blue Ridge! READ IT! And look over your child's papers in their folder!!!!!!! |
