Course Outline

The new Georgia performance standards (GPS) in mathematics address four strands: number and operations, algebra, geometry, and data analysis and probability. Math 1 is carefully designed to develop the natural connections that exist among these strands, between mathematical topics and to other disciplines. These connections allow students to see and use mathematics as a tool for solving complex problems. In order for students to be successful, the rigor of the middle school curriculum must have been mastered. By the end of grade 8, students should have completed the equivalent of traditional first-year algebra and much of the traditional geometry course.
Topics Covered in Math 1: Radicals Polynomials and Rational Expressions Basic Functions and their Graphs Simple Equations Fundamentals of Proof Properties of Polygons Coordinate Geometry Sample Statistics Curve Fitting

EOCT Information

Math 1 students must take a required End of Course Test (EOCT) at the end of second semester developed by the Georiga State Department of Eduction. The test counts as a student's final exam (15% of their second semester grade).

Make Up Work and Grading Policy
|
Make-Up Work Students may make up work or get extra help any day except Thursday!
Only major tests and projects can be made up for unexcused absences. Students have a maximum of five days from the date they return to make up work. Any work not made up within five days will be recorded as a '0'. No work can be made up for cutting class or school.
If you are absent the day before a quiz or a test, you are required to take the quiz or test.
Grading Policy Tests 50% Quizzes 20% Labs 15% HW 10% Review Quizzes 5%
Tests: Each tests will cover several major concepts. A cumulative 9 weeks test will given at the end of each of the four 9 weeks. This 9 weeks test will count as one test grade and could also replace the lowest test grade.
Quizzes: Quizzes will be given between testing periods and will cover only a few concepts.
Labs: Labs will include calculator labs, computer labs, and group/individual tasks.
Homework: Homework will be assigned almost daily and will be taken up on an unannounced basis. To receive full credit for HW, students must write the problem and show steps. Students will not receive any credit for HW with ‘answers only’.
Review Quizzes: These quizzes will cover prior Math 1 concepts. They will be given once a week and will be in multiple choice format.
